Okay, now that I've got your attention...

This poll concerns your feelings about a military draft. The draft has a relatively short history in the United States. For most of our history, there has been no conscription.

Before 1940, we had a draft just twice, both times during wartime. The first was during the Civil War, when both the North and the South conscripted men into their armed forces. It seems to have been generally accepted in the South, while it was very unpopular in the North.

The second draft was in effect during World War I and it ended after the Armistice in 1918.

In 1940 Congress enacted the first peacetime draft. It lasted through the period of the Second World War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, and ended in 1974.

Some in the Bush administration are talking about a draft now because of falling enlistment in the armed services and a perceived need for more soldiers to send to Iraq. Other people think we ought to have a draft even in peacetime. What's your view?

Put it to the vote. Any politician that votes Yes, put them (if eligible), their kids, grand kids, whatever at the top of the list for the draft. Gotta start with the people who support it afterall.

I think in this day and age it would be political suicide to do.

You can't make someone fight if they don't want to.If they have another draft its BS to me.

first question is who in the Bush administration mentioned this? I believe if you do some research you'll find this was first suggested by a democrat Rep. from New York...

but on topic and as a person that recently retired from the military, I'm completely against the draft. The whole time I was in I knew that pretty much everyone I worked with had my back. There were some back stabbing politician wannabes, but 99.9% of the people had your back. The draft will invite people that obviously don't want to be there and the military doesn't need those kinds of people.. last person I'd want to be on patrol with is some hippy that used to protest the war...

I think a list of volunteers should be made where people can sign up for draft if they want. If a war ever comes to our soil, all people on the list would have their family's protection placed as top priority. Those who didn't sign up or protested could be moved to areas that are unprotected.

If the reason for war is just or if people believe it is, then I would bet there would be enough people willing to freely join that there is no need for a draft.

Look at military recruitment in the year following 9-11 when there was a more well defined enemy and cause.
