Ever notice that when a REAL issue doesn't present itself, the issue of semantics always comes up? Would the spanish version national anthem have been an issue if we had captured Osama in the same month? Doubtful.

There was a lul in other general BS, so it became a target. How many things slipped under the radar during the OJ trial? How many things tip-toed by when MJ showed up at court in his pajamas?

The American public in general has the attention span of a golden retriever. "Look, something shiny!!!!"

Thats great. Using the term ghetto makes you a racist, no matter how you slice it. Its not the semantics, its the attidude that the people who use the term. This is a free country and you are free to use hate speech, but under the surface we all know where that attidude is coming from. Carry on.

Ghetto is one of those words that starts out with a specific meaning, but eventually becomes common, everyday language that takes on new meanings. I know I get a mental image of the old Techwood Homes Projects when I think of ghetto...dirty, littered streets and sidewalks, delapidated buildings, graffiti, landscaping not maintained or non-existent...not an appealing picture.

Black culture seems to have it's own set of language rules IE "ghetto fabulous". Sounds like a positive thing. However if a white person refered to a mostly black neighborhood as a ghetto, the blacks who live there may become offended. Bush discribed Obama "articulate". Some blacks found Bush's opinion insulting.

I don't think black people get offended at someone using the word "ghetto"??? It's not an abusive word toward any person or race, although it might offend someone of any race if you call their neighborhood a ghetto...especially if that person was thinking his place was kinda nice...I guess that's why I want to nuke people for saying such things about East Point 'cuz I don't live in the ghetto.

I'm trying to think if I've ever heard a white person referred to as articulate. I don't think I have...and the reason it is insulting is that giving articulate out as a compliment tends to say "Normally black people are inarticulate, but you are an exception".

As far as the Bush insult, why did he feel the need to give kudos on someone's ability to speak fluently in his first language? The implied finish to his thought is, "articulate...for a black man". At least that's the implication I get from it.
