I was involved in a stock group as a kid fresh out of high school where the creator was alleged to get access to IPOs from the big banks of the time who were issuing IPOs which back then was Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. Back then IPOs would jump hundreds of percent from their issue price so the idea was instant money. It was all very convincing. There was a holding period. We had actual meetings where we'd hand pick the ones we thought would do the best.
We had all these spreadsheets and computer programs showing our accounts, balances, and holdings. None of it was real. The founder was taking the money and spending it or hiding it. At the very end he tried to form a LLC or related entity where he'd make all the random group members high ranking people like president and vice president as a way to make them all feel good, and give himself a low ranking position, to try to deflect his own role. It was all very convincing.
I got out more than I put in, and got a new car out of it. Others were not so lucky. People started to try making withdraws, and that's pretty much when it all ended. Getting money out that wasn't there and all... seems like a lifetime ago. People who scam others need more harsh treatment then society gives them. There are predatory charities that prey on the elderly also. My grandmother was donating quite a bit of money there at the end. I suppose she was trying to fill an emotional void in her life that wasn't there.
