Business owners in Oakland describe going to work like it's a 'war zone' - battling consistent waves of violent crime. New data shared with the ABC7 News I-Team reveal a significant increase in robberies and carjackings so far this year.
"Oakland has become a war zone," said Bruce Vong, long-time owner of Quality Tech Automotive Shop along International Blvd.
"It feels like a battleground to go to work."
Vong says business owners in East Oakland close their doors at 3 p.m. because the crime is getting out of control.
"It's like a ghost town," Vong said. "It's scary."
According to data obtained by the I-Team, there were 15 different robberies and two carjackings across the city just this past weekend. To put that in perspective, there's been a 27% increase in robberies year-to-date from 2022 to 2023. And a 19% increase in carjackings year-to-date so far this year.
Many people don't do or say anything until something directly affects even though they see/know what's going on.
The op already mentioned many businesses have to close by 3 PM because of issues. Many can't or do anything because they can't ie afford to move or have ties to the neighborhood like a business. Many residents also fear retaliation or don't want to go court. But they know.
I've seen long time residents of an old Democrat city do things like put their refrigerator in front of back door or window. Same for large pieces of furniture. But they won't move or call the police with crack viles and trash right outside their backyard.
I notice threads started for 1-person crimes. Why? How is a guy in Oakland getting his truck stolen political? How is it controversial? It's a crime. It's always been a crime to steal a vehicle.

Crime bad enough in Oakland that local representatives want the national guard called in. They want a crime emergency

I would imagine the rise of felony theft, in particular, is the controversy because it increasingly seems as if nobody feels like prosecuting anyone for it.
Every video or story where another theft happens and there are no arrests and/or the citizen attempted to protect themselves...the controversy about America being a lawless hellscape for scumbag thieves grows....
