I am seriously thinking that this some kind of plot -- WARNING! conspiracy theory alert! -- to get people who don't buy into this kind of junk (imo) to simply stop reading these kinds of news stories, period. If conservatives become so disgusted with this kind of garbage to the point that they simply stop reading these kinds of stories, it is just another step into molding civilization into the kind of loony (imo) world extreme liberals and leftists seem to want -- no blame or shame about anything, everyone doing their own thing -- and no consequences for anyone except for those who refuse to go along with such insanity.

I'm guessing a significant majority of people on planet Earth have no idea who Magellan is or was.

Was Magellan a violent colonialist? Perhaps, but he was killed in battle by Lapulapu in Mactan, Philippines.

So I guess he got what he deserved.

But he is celebrated for the difficult voyages he undertook, which is why certain space programs have adopted his name. It’s easy to see the correlation between space travel and world discovery.

Anyway, here we go again, putting 21st century morality on a guy who lived 500 years ago. We are so stupid.

Big blob and little blob.

The IAU won't necessarily go along with this.

Really? but we should not surprised this idea is coming from Amherst college in Massachusetts.

Let me guess the logic here with my Liberal Beanie cap on. There is not enough diversity in the field of Astronomy and the reason why is that many things are named after a guy that had slaves, so by trashing the legacy of Magellan the field will attract more people of color? I can hear it now, the Megellanic Clouds will now be called the George Floyd Clouds.

Okay, the Beanie is now off. What a stupid thing to worry about.

The silly thing is that in Astronomy, you discover it. You get to name it.

For example, Comets are named after the discoverer. Asteroids are named after the discoverer or whatever name or word the discoverer wants to use.

So the Magellan galaxies were first discovered by Magellan. He got the right to name them.

I don't think George Floyd was into astronomy.

It's not just Astronomy. They just renamed all the birds because of "names" . Plants got renamed because of "names".

And those names got put there for the same reason...that guy found it.

and don't forget bugs

but your last sentence isn't always the case - many discoveries have been named in honor of other people.
