Any reports of rioting or civil insurrections to be found here? Or is it people working on their own, volunteering, and making necessary precautions? To me, there is a clear and distinct difference between the actions of those who are living here versus New Orleans.
Check out the Demographics...Therein lies the Answer.
I think it is hard to compare the two since Americans have already seen the devestation and the response to Katrina. After learning that lesson, I would think that people would be more proactive and handle the situation differently. If the same situation happened in New Orleans and the response of the residents were the same then I can see a comparison but as of now, no comparison can exist since lessons have been learned.
Bush and FEMA were slow to react during Katrina, due primarily to incompetence and a failure by a GOP administration to see a pressing need to help a city made up of a minority that doesn't vote for them.
And what was Nagin and Blanco's reason for their p*ss poor reaction to the crisis? The city made up of a minority that DID vote for them.
And on CNN this morning, the people whose houses were lost, were already asking if the government was going to come in an tear down the area and rebuild. If you listen to the FEMA folks, they are saying that they learned so many lessons from the Katrina debacle. On the flip side, I do not hear anyone complaining that the Iowans lived in a place they should not be in, that they should fend for themselves, etc. What we can be grateful for is that the situation in New Orleans was not repeated in Iowa. Gladly we learn from our mistakes.
You believe that the people of Iowa are acting the way they are acting is because of WHAT WE LEARNED IN N.O.? Wrong. They have always been self sufficient and not looking for a payday from tragedy like many in N.O. did.

I'm sorry but that is just bs. Hurricane Katrina is the first hurricane of that magnitude to hit US land? No other city or state has ever had a natural disaster? Please, the only lessons learned after Katrina was how to point fingers to avoid admitting that your mayor sucks.
I doubt very seriously, given the circumstances, that anyone would have given a rats a** whether you had a CDL to drive a bus to get the heck out of there.
As a matter of fact, I recall one very young teenager, about 13-14 comandeered a bus and drove a bunch of people to safety.
There were some yougn guys that tole one of the buses. Tey with a mechinic that worked at a bus yard for he district hot wired a bus and left after the storm. They were stoped at the Texas border by police who were watching for stolen goods being transported. There were alo pf other poele on the bus and when it was confirmed they were headed to houston ;they wre escorted to beaumont;Tx. There the salvation army filled their tank and they to a shelter in Houston. The bus was ion fact not stloen because in order to file on someone for they you have to preove that their intented was to deprive the owner of the properety which clear this was not their motive. But then again it is hard to comapre NO with the flooding.Clearly a different situation entirely but I have no doubt that the state and NO offical were in fact negligent in their duties. The difference between flooding and hurricane force winds and flooding is really not compariable. Evacuating a city of one million plus is not the same as evacuating a rural area. Seems tho that people are being evacuated after the fact in many areas of the flooding too.Moving peole just miles compared to hundreds of mile is also much easier.
Heck, the people in Iowa AND in Wisconsin are doing what they always do when there is flood, tornado, fire, etc. They are reaching out to help one another and themselves. They are already in there cleaning up the mess, tearing out what is ruined, and fixing it if possible. I just think that we Midwesterners are that kind of folks. Oh maybe you will find one or two who will want it done for them or who will not help their neighbor. You'll get that anywhere. But after a lifetime living in the midwest and watching folks pull together through every kind of emergency, I am not surprised to be watching them do it again. They'll have their communities back up and running before FEMA even has figured out how to stall them.
