America is so sexually repressed simply because of the great fear that indulging in sex will result in an unwanted pregnancy or venereal disease, or worse, both.

This is amplified by America's obsession with less sex education (abstinence based programs), and the pregancies/disease are because people either don't want to "wrap up" or are too ignorant to do so.

On a personal note, I like the fact there's a small sense of sexual naivety in our culture. I wish we were a little more self-oppressed and practiced self-denial of vices. The only problem is that it doesn't mesh well with an open society and multiculturalism. It's also a sick irony that violence is A-OK but sex is not.

Just because we don't have pictures of naked women's breasts plastered all over the TV, magazines, and buildings like Europe doesn't mean that Americans are sexually repressed, it just mean that we have taste and aren't as obsessed with sex as you are. I think that's a good thing.

By the way, why aren't rape and pedophilia considered crimes in Europe? Is that a good thing in your part of the world?

Which westernized countries are we talking about here?

I don't think for a second that America is 'sexually repressed'. We do have the highest infidelity rates in the world you know. Us Americans are a little bit more reserved about it, and aren't nearly as open about it is all. Some places that really emphasize sex, like Japan, actually have the lowest reports of sex crimes (rape, etc.). A lot of other countries make it an everyday thing so that it doesn't become a major issue like here in the US.

I can understand keeping the sexual commercials limited to the late hours though, wouldn't want a 3 year old to see a KY commercial during his cartoon hour...
This is the second post I've seen referencing Japan as a sexually emphasizing country. I lived there for two years and I can tell you right now that they do not emphasize sex any more than we in America do. In fact, you might be surprised at how censored it is. No Japanese pornography can legally show the pubic area. You will always see it blurred out. While there are some things like anime "porn" that show everything on cartoon characters, these are read more like comic books than Penthouse Letters. The difference in Japan is that they don't freak out if someone brings up the topic of sex. In America, we shield our children's ears and eyes and tell them how disgusting and awful it is. In Japan, it just is. They actually realize that it's a part of life and a part of reproduction. That's the key difference.

The people in America are so awash in this primordial feeling of guilt over seeking pleasure through genitalia that it simply astounds me. Then again, it's highly noticeable that those countries who still latch on to the idea of a deity or prophet being born from a virgin are still up tight about it; it's no wonder that the very premise of sex is a dirty one. Had the Bible mentioned Joseph and Mary doing the reverse cowgirl I have no doubt that sex would not be so looked down upon in today's "Christian" society.

By the way, if you want to see sex you have plenty of options. Why do social progressives want porn on every TV commercial?
We have to wait 10 to 15 more years to move out of the dark ages?? Crap!

Rape and pedophilia not considered a crime in Europe...? Please name which European countries you are referring to.

Default You've got to be kidding ?

America "sexually repressed"? you've got to be kidding.
I only had good experiences sexualwise in the USA; come to France, you'll see what a really sexually repressed country is , all the more that France as an (undeserved) hot reputation.
Women here just do it only to have kids, the guy is not oblidged to marry, but he must breed at least a child.
Recreational sex ? among the gays maybe (I don't know , I'm straight).
Straight women have definitely NOT heard of it.
But some of them talk at lenght of how they are "feminists","liberated",- maybe, only not in sex.
