Is it just me, or is it becoming common place to exaggerate the titles of the threads to make things seem more "terrible" than it really is?
I mean.. all it takes is replacing a few words and you've got the entire message board into a tizzyfit.
examples.. arrested could be replaced with Kidnapped
Gays can be replaced with NAMBLA or pedophiles
abortion can be replaced with Murder....

Even some go so far as to omit the fact that something is a joke.. leaving all of us to really believe there are musicians who really want to kill bill oreilly..

Is the world really going to hell in a handbasket and is everyone scared to walk out their doors every day? or am I just imagining the exaggerations?
Thoughts???

Fear focuses the body but generally stops the mind from thinking. Hysteria is a child's way of Saying "Look at ME." There are a lot of children writing on this board

Blame it on brainwashing by your local TV news. Driven by an ongoing and unrelenting battle to achieve the marginally higher ratings that will justify higher ad rates, your local news-at-eleven outlets will go to ridiculous lengths to produce absurdly sensational teasers and promos suggesting that the most mundane bits of local news to have happened within the most recent 12 hours or so are actually earth-shattering events and developments. The only thing that could possibly be any more shocking than today's news is freaking tomorrow's news, when the two stations who feel that they were out-sensationalized by a third one today will ramp up their efforts toward even greater sensationalism tomorrow.

Gone are the days when a British seaside newspaper could report the sinking of the Titanic under the headline Local Man Lost at Sea...

I complained about just that in a thread a few weeks ago, and I was told that there's no better way to get people's attention. It goes back to what saganista said in the post above.

having fun... and discussing facts are two different things...
exaggerating the news to promote an agenda is wrong and downright false... scarying everyone into your viewpoint does not make it right

That's so true it hurts.

But only when I laugh.

Actually, if this is one's idea of fun, that is pretty scary. To deliberately and anonymously play with another's emotions is cruel. It creates victims who are then ridiculed if they complain. I won't take your advice and lighten up because I can see the larger social implications and none of them are good. We go down the wrong road when we whitewash abuse in our society.

Saganista, as usual, is the voice of reason. His/her post hits the issue right on.
