Just so-thats why grades of the lowest and highest IQ's are a U-shaped curve at most unis.

So true. Then again, what choice is left when 95% of all observations are against you and only 5% are in your favor? Why, argument from the outliers and introduction of one bit of anecdotal evidence after another. This is the right wing's stock and trade...

I'm not sure how the development of skills in areas such as honest research and unbiased analysis will fit under the heading of Gaming the System. There certainly is a system, and it certainly pays to learn how to navigate successfully within it, but I don't see where that would fit in either.

But not the interests of those being "exploited"? If my interests lie in becoming an environmental engineer so that I might help keep our collective human habitat from one day consuming us, how am I being exploited in acquiring the knowledge and experience that will one day qualify me to take up exactly such a position?

Well, that certainly depends. One could well imagine a strict religious institution where going out for pizza with the wrong person could get you expelled. There are others however where it is failure to depart from the conventional that will be more likely of earning punishments such as low grades and weak recommendations.

Intelligence is measured by the ability to reason through problems and situations. Not to make rash decisions based on "gut" feelings.

What is Common Sense? The ability to reason, or deduce? Do you obtain this "Common Sense" through Academic studies. Some do, while others have an innate ability. Math and science help develop these skills. Working through complex math problems faciitate establishing these pathways in the brain. If people cannot afford college, I would suggest picking up a book on LOGIC. Great way to self-educate yourself.

Book intelligence-can study, pass exams and get a degree or certificate in a specialized area of study. Nothing more, nothing less.
Life intelligence-navigates through life on his/her own terms, creates a unique path for him/herself, has a sense of well-being and interacts in a humane way with other people on the planet. Thinks for himself. Finds solutions to problems based on his own inner values and judgements. Has a sense of humor.
Science intelligence-is enthralled and overwhelmed with discoveries, which may or may not benefit anyone. Thinks with left-brain and denies existence of intuition or any right brain knowledge.Values logic and rational decision making. Sets out to figure everything out. Everything is labelled A, B and so on. Lives in the suburbs and has 1.5 children.

The capacity to accumulate and apply knowledge.

People with "book learnin'" have some advantage b/c they are exposed to more knowledge. Can they all assimilate and apply said knowledge? Obviously not.

Some of the most intelligent people I have met left school without graduating and never went to university.
Intelligence is the product of careful thought, consideration and research into issues and ideas. It is the ability to process data in a sentient manner without prejudice and to act accordingly. I am constantly appalled at the lack of thought which goes into most people's serious decisions such as voting or how they come to conclusions about serious topical issues , current affairs etc...

Intelligence is something most of us are born with and something most of us discard in favour for easy judgement and facile decisions. I truly believe most human beings are born with fairly similar levels of intelligence but whether through personal circumstances or laziness most people just lack the ability to use their good judgement and act accordingly in daily life.

Adaptability is also in my opinion an outward sign of natural intelligence. The ability to read signs in others , or to adapt to new and difficult situations shows intelligence.
Knowledge does not hurt and one does not need to attend university to acquire facts. Gathering and deciphering complex data is something which is accessible to all especially nowadays.

Most people shy away from knowledge because it often comes with a dose of responsibility and duty and often dictates action.
Excellent Post.....Finally someone I can understand.

This Post hurt my eyes and was hard to read....perhaps a darker color?
