Now that people are talking about a war tax (broken link), I think it's time to bing back war bonds. They worked for my grandparents, and war supporters cam put their money where their mouth is.

Any thoughts?

An interesting thought!

I don't know about war bonds, but I liked the bonds that people were able to buy at $17.50 and get $25.00 and much more interest if they didn't cash them in at maturation.

I don't recall when these were discontinued. But, one of my Uncle's bought them in my name and I sure was surprised and pleased to get them years later.

Does anyone know about the history of the bond issues?

Actually I don't really know, but I've been told that they just changed the names of them to government bonds or something of the sort. I don't really know.

What they should have is zero-interest war bonds indexed to inflation. Essentially an offer to give the government a risk free loan to fight the war.

It would be interesting to see how many supporters of the war would be willing to put their money where their mouth is.

Savings Bonds have not been discontinued. I buy one for my grandson every other month. They have changed considerably. Orginally a $25 bond cost $12.50 and matured in 5 years. then it changed to 7. Now it's 10 years to maturity but it's still $12.50 for a $25 bond.

May I ask where you buy them? We were offered some bonds as a payroll deduction, but they weren't the same. And I haven't noticed any place selling.

Thanks.

Sure, You can no longer get them over the internet. I did that for a long time and it was real handy. Now I get them at the bank.

That like will explain every thing you need to know. It's not the best interest rate you can get if you hunt around. But my thought was, long term for my grand kids.
