Not only are our troops, supposedly so supported and revered by our Republican administration and congresscritters, get the shaft upon coming home with injuries by being put up in roach motels, but they are also pathetically under-equipped while they are over there. From today's NYT via americablog:

The Pentagon is planning to send more than 14,000 National Guard troops back to Iraq next year, shortening their off-duty time to meet the demands of President Bush’s buildup, Defense Department officials said Wednesday....

“We’re behind the power curve, and we can’t piddle around,” Maj. Gen. Harry M. Wyatt III, commander of the Oklahoma National Guard, said in an interview. He added that one-third of his soldiers lacked the M-4 rifles preferred by active duty soldiers and that there were also shortfalls in night vision goggles and other equipment....

Capt. Christopher Heathscott, a spokesman for the Arkansas National Guard, said the state’s 39th Brigade Combat Team was 600 rifles short for its 3,500 soldiers and also lacked its full arsenal of mortars and howitzers...

Could you imagine if THIS George W was in charge of the American Revolution? We'd be proudly flying the Union Jack today. In any event, how the myth that Republicans are "strong on defense" persists in light of Keystone Kops fiascos like this floors me. Maybe we really are a nation of idiots...

The ARKANSAS and OKLAHOMA National Guard?
The ARKANSAS and OKLAHOMA National Guard????

These two small-time units get quoted in the NEW YORK TIMES and you want me to believe that our MILITARY FORCES are short of equipment - you're gonna have to do better than that...

Here are a few articles to chew on: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...120401347.html

To top it off this guy has given some pretty poor pay raises lately.

Certainly has failed expectations of many military members expecting better pay raises from their "military loving republicans" and for pay parity issues to be resolved.... http://www.govexec.com/story_page.cf...40&ref=rellink Congress wanted a 2.7% raise, BUSH wanted a 2.2% raise.

Tell that to the troops at Valley Forge, the lucky ones had shoes...

Anyways aren't you the same person who is against the additional funding for the War on Terrorism? Aren't you the same person who is saying YES to increased welfare spending and entitlement programs, YES to universal health care, YES to this and that. Can't have it both ways, it's the same "guns or butter" argument. Republicans may be "strong on defense", but Republicans don't control spending at the current time. Look in the mirror when you ask why the troops don't have more.

While Clinton was president he cut sofar back on the military, what little we have has not been built back up like it should have been. Yeah Bush should have been more aggressive in the first few years. But would he have gotten the support from you libs? Are you people ready to build a real large military and staff it?

Most of that military cut back is how he narrowed the budget deficit. Also his do nothing military stance helped create the impression that the US would not defend itself if attacked.

If people think Bush didnt do enough, they should have let me run it. I would have nuked afew spots, covered more areas with pigs blood and left a strong message to leave us alone or nothing stands when we return. they only understand the hard strong aproach. Talk is a sign of weakness. No hawk icon, too bad.
