Refusing to put it to a 'vote' by the neighborhoods in the immediate vicinity of the proposed Genesis/Dept of Corrections facility use of Taylor Building Five., (we’ve been told a referendum on this issue is impossible), the City Panning Commission board met Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 4:30PM and heard a somewhat lengthy discussion from the audience. The over whelming majority opinion was Very Negative. A petition signed by over 300 neighbors was dismissed as, ‘so what?’
Additionally, none of us ever received nor did the Board solicit from us, the property owners, our input prior to placing delinquent girls in building ONE from yet _another_ ‘correctional’ facility (the girls set fire to their original site).
Regarding Building One, Mayor Becker explained this was an emergency situation and their placement is for an inestimable time frame.
Is there nothing we, the tax payers, can do about this obvious trend?
This responder as well as the others in attendance at the meeting last evening were told the City Panning Commission Board has already made up its mind and will vote to PASS it at the next meeting. They, the Board, plan to have more Board members in attendance so that this can be voted on by them, Tues., March 13, 2007 4:30 PM.
We, the neighbors including those from Elmwood Park would like to especially thank the Racine Journal Times for their front-page coverage on Tues., Feb. 27, 2007. There were still families who had not heard about what was happening to our neighborhoods until this news coverage.
