To say that no racism is involved in the attacks on Obama is IMO Political naivete. I am sure President Clinton and President Obama and others have downplayed this- for 'political expediency' Perhaps President Carter was more honest.
In any case I think it is fair and objective to say the vast majority of those attending the Washington event a few weeks ago- whom where for the most part 'corporate' sponsored 'Teabaggers' did not vote for Obama- and considering some of the images and hate messages written and portrayed-on signs it seems silly not say there was no overt racism or subliminal racism (to say the least).
Most of these people where white, middle age and older- the rock core of what is left of the republican party- and most of the republican party could at best be called far right wing, and more dangerously bordering on Neo Nazi. Many if not all of these people resent greatly seeing a black man president- its that simple- and they refuse to accept this. The nasty names, the falsehoods, the racist images all portend a scary side of America today; how a minority of Americans has shifted into the most extreme element of political beliefs in all our history. The deep chasms in American society are again exposed - and are now deeper then anytime in our history since the years 1820-1860- and are based on the same geographic principals as then; The northern and western states being progressive- and the mid south and south, and the modern day states of Utah, Idaho, Wyoming clinging to a certain political and economic philosophy of the past.- Much is is still based on race, but also now gay rights, immigration , and the role of Government-
From my observations in American History the nation is more deeply divided then in 1968- the main difference today are demographics, which will limit the growth and political clout of these extremists, Confining most of them to the aforementioned Geographic areas.
