Rich people can afford to exchange gifts, take trips, take part in various holiday events. Rich people get paid for holidays, even if they don't work.
Poor people cannot affort those things, but go deeper in debt trying to. Poor people get paid only for the days they work, and lose a day's pay when their employment shuts down for the holiday.
Government employees are not well paid by any stretch of the imagination but they get paid for every kind of holiday... even more than non-governemental employees. Highly Democratic Union members get paid for all kinds of things that they do not deserve and for all kinds of holidays!
I agree about the weekends, though. They've become irrelevant. Who cares which 2 days you have off? Why force everyone to get all their chores done with the massive hordes on Sat and Sun? Just have everything open 7 days a week. That actually may even help the economy.
I agree... I used to work Tuesday-Saturday, and it was fabulous having both a weekday & weekend-day off every week! But it would be even more fabulous if we didn't have to worry, and things were actually open on Sundays. As for the holidays, I don't really care either way... I don't celebrate Christian holidays because I'm Jewish, but as long as you leave me alone to observe mine, I don't care what you do on/about yours. This year on Christmas Day my mother & I (and my roommate) are seeing a comedy show at a Chinese restaurant - organized by a local Jewish group, and waaaaaay too funny & appropriate.

As for the holidays, I don't really care either way...
