When the GOP tries to muffle its social conservatives as many of its members now want it to do, the Party will lose more elections than they do now. Many social conservatives now voting GOP are more concerned about social issues than fiscal ones because their beliefs lead them to believe that moral integrity takes care of fiscal issues. When the GOP begins telling Christians to just shut up and vote, if Christians vote at all, they will select the party which gives some appearance of social parity. If the GOP fails to realize this, 40 years wandering in a desert will seem short.
The GOP needs to think about securing the moderates, not placating the Christian right-wing. That's the way to win elections. It's also much better for the country than the "divide and conquer" strategy that I think you're advocating.

Yes, and look at our economy now. Apparently, not only do social conservatives believe what you say above, but they are also willing and eager to disregard the real-world evidence that their beliefs on the economy are a steaming pile of horse dung.
Morality doesn't make good fiscal policy. Good fiscal policy makes good fiscal policy.

But if we could just pass more anti-gay legislation, wouldn't that solve our economic problems?

Fascinating but bizarre train of thought...do you actually think this merits much of a response? Do you disagree that good fiscal policy makes good fiscal policy?

lol.. You need to learn the meaning of: . The next time you post something, roll your cursor over the face icons on the right so you know what they mean.

I was not promoting any sort of strategy. I was simply saying it would not be wise for the GOP to chase off Christians especially for the sake of trying to win over moderates. McCain is as moderate as you can get yet we all know where that went.
In short, the GOP will remain in the dugouts until it comes back to its conservative principals which includes both social and fiscal issues. Counting on the fence-straddlers may seem the politically correct thing to do but in doing so you usually just end up with a barb in your crotch.

McCain isn't that moderate, according to the American Conservative Union - he's pretty conservative. Specter, Snowe, and Collins are truly moderate Republicans:

I've met with McCain staffers on more than one occasion. If his staffers were in line with him, and there's no reason to think they were not, he is as definably a moderate as there is. McCain is a likable fellow to be sure but his selection of Palin to bolster the right side of the ticket says more than I can about his policies.
