I am still not sure what the attraction of Oprah is all about, but from her track record women would do better to follow Marge Simpson.
I don't know about Marge Simpson...have never watched the Simpson's, but I totally agree with you about Oprah. Too many people think her word is gospel, and think she is the 'be all, end all'. IMHO I think they should think more for themselves instead of hanging on every word that comes out of Oprah's mouth!!
These "memoirs" cheapen the lives of both the survivors and those who died because they used the suffering of others for their own personal gain. The author of Misha isn't even Jewish. It is an honor, so I'm told and have read, in the Jewish faith to talk about being a survivor and rightly so. How does one describe it when part of that story telling is fabrication as in the case of Rosenblat's book?
They were both able to profit from their venture because people were unwilling to question or were shamed when they questioned the stories. Survivor stories should be vetted and researched by publishers just like any other story as much as possible instead of being printed without question. How hard will it be for other Holocaust survivors to come forward and tell their story? How much do you think hate groups and Holocaust deniers enjoy hearing about situations like this to support their agenda?
The authors of Misha and Angel at the Fence took advantage of people's willingness to believe in the human ability to survive under horrible circumstances. I think this makes it even harder for kids to respect and appreciate history when such crucial events like these are used to create fictional stories. Indeed, there are children and adults who will no doubt continue to believe these are true stories despite the media attention.
The author of Angel actually is actually a camp survivor--it's hard to believe that someone who had lived through that kind of ordeal would cheapen it just to make a buck. Which leads me to believe he may have a few screws loose.

I'm not sure how this is Oprah's fault. If a book is good, or at least reads like it is it would seem to be the publishers responsibility to insure that the work is authentic. Is Oprah anymore punked than National Public Radio, or any other reviewers? While anding Oprah to the thread title certainly peeks one interest it is more than a bit misleading or is this just an opportunity to slag on Ms. Winfrey?

Thanks for posting. It was late when I was typing and neglected to include that.
