Thank you, Mr. President | Op-Ed Contributors | Jerusalem Post

[color="Red"]Here is a politically incorrect assessment: Today President George W. Bush will hand over to his successor a Middle Eastern foreign policy outlook far brighter than the one he inherited from Bill Clinton. The 44th US president will have in the Gulf area and beyond what No. 43 so desperately missed: freedom of action to react to upcoming crises.

I just took out a few pieces of a long article...click on the link to read the whole article.

There are so many Bush-haters on this forum, this will probably be the shortest thread in CD's history.

Either that or the Bush-haters will hijack it and turn it into another Bush hate fest.

For the record, I have two things to thank Bush for: 1) No further terrorist attacks on US soil after 9/11 and 2) doing the right thing by commuting the sentences of Border Patrol agents, Ramos and Campeon (even if he did wait to the last minute).

Conveniently forgetting of course, that most presidents don't epically fail and ALLOW an attack to happen. Bush and company dropped the ball on this one -- they had all the information ahead of time pointing towards the fact that this was going to happen and they did nothing to prevent it. Bush etc are directly to blame for 9/11 and deserve no kudos after the fact for "no further terrorist attacks on US soil..."

Bye bye Bush...good riddance and don't let the door smack you in the butt on the way out.

Agreed! I didn't like so much about Clinton's policies, but hate him, I did not and do not. Enough with the hate. Thank you, President (for another few hours) Bush.

Best of luck, (soon to be) President Obama. I wish you well and hope you do right by our country.

EIGHT YEARS on, the US position in the Gulf looks much more manageable: Strenuous double containment of Iraq and Iran has given way to difficult but doable containment of Iran. Today, Iraq looks like the most promising country in the entire region. In Baghdad, the Arab world's only democratic government has gained authority throughout the country. Sunnis, Shi'ites and Kurds have looked into the abyss of civil war and wisely shrank back from the edge. Baghdad is running up a budget surplus of $70 million, which will render peaceful deal making among Iraq's tribes and religious factions easier. The country enjoys freedom of the press, and rebuilding is in full process

Iraq's success story is Bush's success story. And it is not just about Iraq alone. The war, which tragically cost the lives of so many valorous US servicemen and women, put al-Qaida on the run. By bleeding the ranks of foreign terrorists from Morocco, Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries, it took internal pressure off those very countries. Moreover, Bush's war on terror forced governments from Morocco to Pakistan to choose sides. For decades they preferred to pay ransom to Islamist elements within their borders. "You are either with us, or against us" - Bush's cold ultimatum put an end to that, most famously in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
But when it flares up, the US will be much better positioned to react to it, due to its firm position in Iraq. Europeans, who are much closer to possible crisis zones, will have to be grateful for the American presence in this geographical and political heartland of the Middle East. The credit for the West's wholly transformed strategic position in that region must go to President George W. Bush. Thank you, Mr. President.

Im affraid I have to agree with this point of view. There were so many warnings and all they did was protect themselves, administration flew on private planes, ground to air missles deployed around bush just before the attack. They protected themselves and left the rest of us to fend for ourselves, without even warning us as to what they knew. He is a disgrace and trampled on the Constitution. Send him to the Hague and hold him accountable. His reign of terror is over in less than 2 hours.

Thank you for not paying attention to that memo, "terrorists going to attack"
Thank you for dividing our country further
Thank you for lying to us to start a personal war
Thank you for bankrupting the U.S.
Thank you for embarassing us around the world and ruining our reputation
Thank you for allowing torture

Good riddance to this bastard!

"Sunnis, Shi'ites and Kurds have looked into the abyss of civil war and wisely shrank back from the edge"

As long as we have a ton of troops over there, but the moment we leave, it will go back to being Iraq.

Without a strong and almost tyrannical leader, tribal warfare will return, as it is a nation of borders not people, and they havent gotten past the 17th century.

Yep, the Bush haters have come out!! No surprise.

For the record, that there were several terrorist attacks during the Clinton years:

1993 - The first World Trade Center bombing
1995 - Attempted crashing of plane on White House
1995 - Oklahoma City bombing
1996 - Khobar Towers bombing - Saudi Arabia
1998 - U.S. Embassy bombings Kenya/Tanzania
2000 - USS Cole Bombing - Yemen

I hope we will have something to thank Obama for at the end of his Presidency.
