For thousands of years, western civilization has not been able to conquer whatever it is that we are attmepting to defeat in Afghanistan. Why the hell are we not helping our people right here in the good old USA?

War mongering only makes a handful of people very rich and the rest get shipped home in a box.

As for 9/11, we were attacked by Saudis and a few Morrocans.

the big 'soviet union' failed miserably in trying to take over afghanistan, so it's pointless having a war with them.
i'd say bring home the troops!.

The Muj weren't doing so well until the appearance of Stinger missiles...it made the use of close air support difficult.

As to why we are there now, fighting the Taliban, you know the group who harbored Al Qaeda, you know, the group that murdered several thousand people here in the USA.

Yes. Google Stinger missile. Afghanistan was a proxy war between the Cold War superpowers and like all wars, the antagonists will find themselves allied with nations that they would not be with otherwise under different circumstances.

You mean those Sunni fundamentalist extremist, like the ones in Iraq that the United States government pays so they won't attack us, those American hating, terrorist loving, Taliban supporting types?

Does it make you feel good that your tax dollars are being given to the very type of people who attacked us in the first place and set in motion this perpetual war?

Al Qaeda and its influences are all over the world. The more war mongering and war profiteering that we allow the stronger Al Qaeda becomes by recruiting more radicals. Maybe you'd be interested to know about Bush and Cheney's experience with the Taliban...you know the group that harbored Al Qaeda.

"According to the Washington Post, the Special Envoy of Mullah Omar, Rahmatullah Hashami, even came to Washington bearing a gift carpet for President Bush from the one-eyed Taliban leader. The Village Voice reported that Hashami, on behalf of the Taliban, offered the Bush administration to hold on to bin Laden long enough for the United States to capture or kill him but, inexplicably, the administration refused. Meanwhile, Spozhmai Maiwandi, the director of the Voice of America's Pashtun service, jokingly nicknamed "Kandahar Rose" by her colleagues, aired favorable reports on the Taliban, including a controversial interview with Mullah Omar."

CRG -- Getting used to the idea of double standards: The underlying maxim is "we will punish the crimes of our enemies and reward the crimes of our friends"
