Democrat senator Debbie Stabenow has told nationally syndicated talk host Bill Press she will push for talk radio “accountability hearings” in order to impose government-mandated “balance” in the radio marketplace. According to the Gladwin, Michigan, senator the airwaves are “dominated by one view” that “overwhelms people’s opinions — and, unfortunately, incorrectly,” and said that “right-wing conservative talk hosts” are “trying to make people angry and saying all kinds of things that aren’t true and so on,” Radio Ink reports on February 5.
Texdave makes a good point, despite how he may spell
If I recall correctly, when the religious right cries foul about the sexual content in prime time tv shows they are told to 'turn the channel if they don't like it'. And rightly so.
If I recall correctly, when the religous right cries foul over a movie such as 'dogma' that essentially makes fun of their beliefs and certainly puts a non traditional spin on it (jesus was reincarnated into a female abortion dr) they were told not to see the picture if they don't like it. And rightly so.
Now, we have a bunch of crybaby democrats who cannot deal with the fact that AirAmerica failed, and that whether they like it or not, conservative talk radio has an audiance. To them I say -- don't like it, don't listen to it.
Good. There is absolutely nothing wrong with equal airplay of opposing views. It is not "silencing" either side, but giving equal airtime to both.
Disagree - it's unfair, crybaby manipulation that's domed to abject failure in the real world even if by some remote chance it were to become law. Even though it is Alex Jones's website the OP links to, the article is right on IMO.
In other words, according to Stabenow, the American people are unable to formulate their own opinions and the government must do this for them. In order to facilitate this process, the Michigan senator pledges to “pass a standard” based on the revoked Fairness Doctrine.
If the right wing wants to lie and spew trash that's fine, let it. Is Debbie Stabenow also going to balance the number and the degree of "balance" among political blogs on the Innernets?
I think it's a compliment to the left that they dont need voices telling them what to think as badly as the right seems to.
Debbie Stabenow is pushing her husband's business interests IMO. The whole thing is shameful and stupid.
Limited to talk radio is odd. Then there's the concept of Fair and balanced... Purist objectivity of any individual is mostly malarkey, isn't it? How about just obliging the press to be the press by telling the truth (as in facts), and not dressing up in anchorman attire, labeling themselves NEWS, yet hiding under the heading of freedom of (libelous) speech entertainment in a court of law. Red framed screen warnings when speculation is in play vs selling the american public that Saddam was responsible for 9-11.
I like the idea of southern justice where the punishment fits the crime. For instance, if they get caught in one too many lies, the FCC should force them to audibly and visually superimpose "We're entirely FOS" alternating with "Yellow journalism" over their respective programing for as long as it takes for the retractions to be understood by polling Joe Public regularly at their expense. Anyone still believe Saddam did it? Push up's till I'm tired! I'm thinking that just might be incentive enough for them to consider their words more wisely instead of making themselves out to be #1 scoop purveying BS.
When it comes to talk shows disclaiming themselves from journalism we can just impose "shameless biddy gossips" tags over every single one of them right from the get go.
Pride in journalist standards (conservative and liberal)
Race to the bottom liars for market share.
I'm not so hard to please, really.
Left and Right have the rights NOW to air their opinions
