COLUMBIA, S.C. - Police in the South Carolina county where Michael Phelps was photographed smoking from a marijuana pipe have been arresting people as they seek to make a case against the superstar swimmer, lawyers for two arrested people said Thursday.
Attorneys Joseph McCulloch and Dick Harpootlian told The Associated Press they each represent a client charged with possession of marijuana who were questioned about the party Phelps attended near the University of South Carolina campus in November.
The lawyers said the two clients were renters at the house where the party apparently took place, although they were not at the party. The two have since moved and were arrested after police executed a search warrant at their new home and accused them of having a small amount of marijuana there.

The most important thing is that we arrest hardened criminals like Phelps...who once held a bong at a party. Phelps? Manson? Do you see the correlation? It's uncanny. It's spooky. It's a GUY holding a BONG. I say we try him and Madoff in the same courtroom, at the same time. It will be the trial of the century.
Did you inhale? DID YOU? Did YOU, Mr. Phelps, BOGART THE BUD??? THE people, Mr. Phelps....the PEOPLE want an answer!
South Carolina has one of the nation's highest unemployment rates, and is currently facing a budget crisis. But at least they've got their spending priorities straight!
Anyhow, Phelps should probably just avoid SC or surrounding states for a while. No law enforcement official in, say, Seattle would enforce an SC-based state warrant for pot.
if they are going to arrest these people they are going to have to start arresting everyone on these reality shows that are smoking weed or participating in underage drinking (i guess they would just give them a ticket). this doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
It's absolutely pathetic, it's just a publicity grab by those moronic law-enforcement officers to do this. 50% of all murders go unsolved, yet they actually spend time and money prosecuting an olympic champion who partied three months ago?
Think, if all the effort that went into infiltrating all those college pot smokers (San Diego State...they "busted" the fraternity pot ring...yet I could go to the same houses and buy pot again today) went into finding Osama Bin Laden, maybe we would have found him by now. Think of the tens of thousands of hours spent on pointless marijuana prosecution and then think about how much safer we'd be if those hours were spent on violent crimes or keeping our borders safe. Pathetic.
It's about time we get hardened criminal minds and threats to society like Michael Phelps off the streets.
