Obama benefits from anything that squeezes the consumer and weakens the economy. High gas prices make it more of a case to push for alternative energy cars, so up they have to go with his blessing.
With a President like this, who needs terrorists?

I dont know, we never had this problem before.

It sounds to me like the oil companies just came up with some "plausible" excuses for increasing profit margins, and the media is running with it.

A few places below $1.80 here in Austin, but diesel is still in the $3 range.

And

2. How come nobody in congress is talking about it?

Is this just happening here? Or are you guys experiencing the same in your locations?
There is a lag between oil prices and gas prices as well as other nuances like the tax which is a flat amount added and not a %. Oil is also used for different things and of course....there are OTHER fixed costs to producing gas.

To summarize:
1) You are assuming all costs are variable. That's a really bad assumption, even worse if you didn't know you were making that assumption by default.

2) You should look at more data points. Here is a chart:
Gas vs. Oil Price Comparison

Notice how from 1980-2000 gas hung around $1.50 a gallon give or take 25cents while oil prices ranged from 12-35?

Lastly, congress isn't talking about it because people only care when it's high and then it's used as a political wheapon to try to make it seem like you care about the little guy and their opponents are evil people in bed with big oil.

As silly as that person's comments were....they are just some faceless schmo on the internet.

Now reflect that similar comments were made when Bush was in office about him and big oil....taking record profits etc. and they came from the gal that is the presumptive Democratic nominee for president in 2016.

Just something to reflect on.

No! I remember cheaper fuel.

1980, I was paying 65¢ a gal. My GTX, sucked it down. $10 would get ¾ tank
All through the 90's it seamed to be $1.01 forever.
Got my first diesel in 2003, because it was still @ $1.01 and better fuel mileage, with gas up around $1.25
Now, diesel is almost $1 more than gas, in some places.
My next truck, I'm going back to gas.
