"Not even the least skilled, least educated Americans want to work in agriculture these days. More than 70% of U.S. farmworkers are estimated to be illegal immigrants. And if the SSA's no-match letters work -- if employers act on them as expected -- that could drive fruit and vegetable farming out of the United States, putting California's $30-billion-a-year industry at risk.

Agriculture would be just the beginning. According to economists, every farm job sustains three or four others -- at food processing plants, agricultural supply firms, companies that build trucks and other farm machinery -- many of them jobs held by native-born workers. And no-match letters won't go just to farmers. Hotels, restaurants, construction firms, landscaping contractors and healthcare services will get them too."

California could have plenty of cash if they would ...

1. Stop being a nanny state.
2. Help ICE round up and deport illegals. (or get the illegals, legal.)
3. Tap all the oil and natural gas they have offshore.

as a little added cash they could sell Nancy Pelosi on eBay (they wouldn't get much but it's a start.)

1. America was already broke when Obama took office. Read what Professor Roubini of Columbia Univ. and others are saying about the estimates of aggregate negative equity in the U.S. banking system.

2. The economics of California agriculture have been distorted (subsidized) by illegal labor for 150 years. Please tell us something we don't already know.

Doomed!! We are all doomed!!

We should have heeded the warnings...

Dr. Egon Spengler: There's something very important I forgot to tell you.
Dr. Peter Venkman: What?
Dr. Egon Spengler: Don't cross the streams.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Why?
Dr. Egon Spengler: It would be bad.
Dr. Peter Venkman: I'm fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. What do you mean, "bad"?
Dr. Egon Spengler: Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
Dr Ray Stantz: Total protonic reversal.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Right. That's bad. Okay. All right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Egon.

Whattt???? You have GOT to be kidding!!!

Read the title of the POST - Obama's America: A third world country!!

THe OP is quite clearly blaming Obama for California's troubles...

Why would he have started the title with 'Obama's America' if he didn't want to link him directly to the problems California is facing???

ROFLMAO!!!

ICE is underfunded (and always has been) and thus cannot adequately enforce the present immigration laws. This is all as directed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. If you can't prevent the passage of a law you don't agree with, you can always lobby to ensure that its enforcement is never adequately funded!

Sure blame Obama for G.W. Bush mess.. That's like blaming Arnold for the Democrats ruining California. You're a joke.

True but we can slid a billion or so of the porkulus package to ICE, they'll never miss it.

Allydriver, it's interesting you bring that up, not sure how many fellow CDer's know that Mexican labourers often continue up past Cali and into Canada.
Okanagan valley in British Columbia, about 100 miles east of Vancouver, along with Saskatchewan, Alberta and southern Ontario invite them up every year to help with the crops. After a few years, the sons and sometimes the fathers get into the lucrative construction industry as well.

I remember one January snowy weekend, stopping in a small town bar here in Ontario, and meeting a few of them sitting at a nearby table, we spent several rounds discussing the Vicente Fox reforms, and our hopes for Felipe Calderon, how the future Mexican world cup soccer team is looking, and they told me in their words they were impressed with my knowledge of the Oaxacan Indian uprisings, but as a supporter of the Russell Green libertarian AIM movement, I recommended that the oaxacans should look for guidance from them.
They mentioned to me how no matter how many of the wifes and moms had warned them to bundle up because of the cold, they couldn't get over how bitter the wind chill can get.

I've often thought the danger of building fences at the border is they are more often used in history to keep citizens in, rather than out.
