It wasn't respect, it was worshiping and now they are realizing he's human. Not the Beyond Human, most put on a pedestal to SAVE THE WORLD!!

'Save the world'? No, but perhaps they were ecstatic to see an American president who wouldn't DESTROY it.

Thanks! I was raised Presbyterian and went through a VERY liberal backlash in late adolescence and college, so I'm definitely a conservative who can relate to the post-modern American liberal movement (as opposed to recoiling in knee-jerk reactionary horror). I'm just conservative in my belief that libertarianism, strong/healthy family ties, and self-sufficiency are vital values in determining both past and future success. Put me with (1) an abandoned mother who does her best to make ends meet, (2) an immigrant who risks persecution and "dirty work" out of the desire to offer support to a family with the misfortune of being born in a destitute economy, or (3) a responsible, educated, hard-working citizen who has become stigmatized and jobless due to simply wanting to smoke a doobie every other weekend, and you'll see me revert to what my parents not-so-affectionately call a "bleeding heart".

I watch Obama and look at his policies, and while they're a bit too liberal to me (and in other ways not liberal enough or the wrong kind of liberal, I believe), I must say they are also a respectable attempt to undo the damage of Bush's executive policy (I'm proud to say I'm not one of the hypocrit/ideologue conservatives) and the damage of corrupt corporations and misled banks. In all actuality, those who pay any attention to Obama's policy (instead of rhetoric) and "the establishment" we have in this country will really see that Obama is likely to be a fairly well-rounded President, and he'll be tempered by said establishment where he tends toward socialism and diplomacy in such a way that many conservatives are understandably threatened. Finally, both conservative and liberal leaders in our government exhibit reprehensible corruption, and until us common folk are willing to take a stand for what we believe in and against what helps nobody but those who already help themselves way too much, it won't matter which ideology inundates our executive branch... the middle class will get screwed and our proud and thoroughly tested and triumphant country will fall behind. We have a political/ideological pendulum in this country that has riled doomsayers/naysayers in its day but ultimately comes out on top, and I say to LET 'ER KEEP SWINGING!

As a fellow of Obama's who was raised by a school teacher, I have faith that Obama values education and initiative, and I hope to see education funding (and consequently expectations) ramped up. Education is the only true way to counter our current economic threats. If people had a better understanding of investment and its contracts (e.g., home ownership) and more practical career qualifications introduced via public education, I believe the economic and sociological problems we currently face could be prevented.

Obama needs to stay in the White House and work on the downfall of the United States. He cannot be on "vacation" visiting with Jay Leno and other comedians. His head is not in the game...because he doesn't know what he is doing. The people of the U.S. will soon find out he is not what he promised. He already showing this.
The man does not even know what to do, or how to act, when foreign leaders visit the White House. He gives the Prime Minister of G.B. a basket of DVD's? Come on!! It does not take a Harvard Law Degree to know you should act proper and give something symbolic and meaningful to our largest ally!!! He already has them peeved because he is giving back the bust of Winston Churchill!! What a smart guy!!
I love how he also dances around the fact AIG gave his campaign $100,000. He is a puppet for the old, corrupt Democrats like Pelosi, Reed and Dodd!! The Dems wanted to make history and wanted someone they could easily control....baby, they got one...he can't even speak for himself.
The day will come when all of the Obama supporters will realize the mistake they made. You can see how this all happened if you go to HowObamaGotElected.com and look at some of the footage on UTube. These people (largely black and blue-collared) knew nothing about the man and what he stood for...they knew nothing about Biden or all of his cronies! They will wake up....

In all reality, good luck voting for a President who doesn't exhibit some form of "insider" or "elitist" corruption. That's a lonely ballot, sadly.

You're right in that those who over-idealize Obama as the messiah of the liberal movement are probably in for a disappointing surprise, but I doubt he's going to be worse than any of the other options we had. In many ways, we needed someone to counter Bush's policies of the last eight years, and I believe it's realistic to figure that's what we got.

McCain is a noble man and was quite qualified for the job, but he was promising to just be an extension of Bush and all we got from him was a fear platform with pandering to the lowest common denominator. Just as with Obama (and pretty much any Presidential candidate), McCain's promises were too shallow to those of us with an understanding of government and economics, and what he seemed to suggest in some instances was too much like Bush. Finally, McCain was in plenty of corrupt pockets of his own, just like Bush (yup, what an awful association he made with that endorsement). That in mind, I feel that my vote for Obama was not so much for a lesser of two evils as just the most politically prudent decision for the current state of the nation. We need to invest in reviving our economy at home... not foreign wars to fill politico's pockets. The Republicans had their chance in Bush, and that failed miserably. He might as well have just flipped off the middle class in a national address with the way he governed.
