To those who believe that gov't should play a major role in an economy where do you fit corrupt governments in this? In many poor countries like those in Africa the governments are known for having a lot of intervention in their economies and they are well known for looting their countries mineral wealth. Isn't big government the problem in African countries? Aren't African countries examples of where government control of the economy needs to be lessened and not expanded?

Big government isn't the problem in Africa. Corrupt government is.

Well since you can't further empower corrupt governments, by definition they already enjoin unfettered empowerment, then other forces in the country need to share that power, namely a vibrant and free press to spark a real reformist movement amongst the populace. Certainly during the 19th Century political corruption in the U.S. would have rivaled anything seen in Africa today, it was only through the constant exposure through the efforts of the press that those in power lost the confidence of the populace. I will bet that there is a high correlation between press freedoms and corruption.

The problem is too often big government morphs into corrupt government. Isn't that how you guys feel about "big oil", or "big, bad corporations"? Shouldn't the same standard be applied to government?

No, because this is America and somehow by magic (much like the magic promised by voodoo economics aka Keynesism) godvernment just works.

No, Obama said it would be different with his administration.
So it is written.
