South carolina has a long history of voting republican. There was a joke here for a long time about birds flying in circles because they only had right wings. Governor Mark Sanford is merely the latest incarnation.

He was elected because he was conservative, republican, yada yada yada, and as such, he was expected to stand up for all things Southern, meaning "heritage" and guns, even though he made a total ass of himself personally.

But Sanford fooled them all. He is a conservative libertarian. His latest veto, which will close the S.C Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum. has been upheld by the legislatrure. Maybe next week he can veto funding for that ridiculous CBF flapping in the breeze in front of the State House like a scarecrow put there to keep major businesses from locatiing in South Carolina.

There may be hope for the South yet. Thanks, Mark.

Wow, such an impressive display of making a mountain out of a molehill, Cuebald. I'm pretty sure the article states quite clearly this is due to budget woes instead of some convoluted measure to hide SC's confederate military history from the public.

You're really reveling in this aren't you? That's sad. It seems you missed the point entirely.

He vetoed the budget for the museum...nothing else. Stop sensationalizing.

If done, the museum could run on donations or private funding.

Whatever it takes -- there is a lot of history here.

Like I said before, only a fool buries history.

And besides, all he did was cut the funding, some private investor will probably support it.

It isn't a Confederate museum, it is a military museum that spans the entire history of this country and the state of South Carolina. A few years ago when I lived near Aiken they found several artifacts from a Revolutionary War battle that ended up in that museum (or so we were told). Sad that they will now be hidden away under lock and key.

Despite the praise of the OP, this is actually a sad testament to where the first cuts are made when we hit budget issues down here. Public education, museums, and libraries are always the first hit. This is a loss not some victory as the OP insinuates.

At least he's cutting. Other states are crying to Uncle Sam that they will have to slash fire, police and teachers if they don't get handouts.

Give the guy credit..he's slashing what needs to be slashed first.
