Those who hoped that the change promised by candidate Barack Obama would include repeal of the various acts that have stripped Americans of their constitutional rights should be disappointed. Benjamin Franklin supposedly wrote, "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

My thoughts are

(1) the Obama Administration isn't exactly over, so it's a little early for an obituary like this. Its also not that hard to understand why he hasn't made it his top priority. Still, history will judge him for his priorities and everything else he does, just like all Presidents.

(2) Ultimately, Presidents don't pass or repeal Laws.

(3) If no member of Congress is motivated to repeal the Patriot Act it will be up to the Courts. It hasn't had a good test there yet.

(4) We need to have some confidence in the system we claim we believe in, rather than declare it dead or a failure every time an issue comes up.
