PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad - Presidents Barack Obama and Hugo Chavez have met for the first time, shaking hands as the Summit of the Americas gets under way in Trinidad and Tobago.

Photos released by the Venezuelan government show the two smiling and Obama touching Chavez on the shoulder.
The Venezuelan presidency says Obama initiated the handshake. It quotes Chavez as telling Obama he hopes for better relations between their nations.

Chavez also reportedly said Friday: "With this same hand I greeted Bush eight years ago. I want to be your friend." As recently as last week, Chavez expressed a desire to "reset" relations with Washington.

Wow, is this Chavez the same fellow that called Bush the Devil and openly mocked him at the UN Summit? Didn't he say that the air stunk of Bush... Anyways it's amazing how we are viewed now with a new administration... It's called diplomacy.

Are we all dreaming the same terrible dream? What ever happened to our nation's love of freedom and democracy? For this man to shake the hands of a dictator who he himself orders terrible sessions of torture to keep him self in power while we want to convict those who save us from those who want to harm us.

where's the diplomacy with Israel, a long standing America supporter???
Then on Thursday came the news that Mr Netanyahu's planned first meeting with President Obama in Washington next month had been called off.
Mr Netanyahu had hoped to capitalise on his attendance at the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference in Washington to visit the White House.
But Administration officials informed Mr Netanyahu's office that the President would not be "in town".

Obama's stance worries Israelis | theage.com.au

guess he's too busy with his new bff.
