People are willing to obviously pay more than they have to have shelter since people have to have it. Yea back in the day people would sell a house for what it was worth.
What exactly do you mean by "worth value"? Do you mean "how much the house cost to construct", or construction cost plus a reasonable profit (in that case, define "reasonable"!)?

Using a made-up term such as "worth value" is meaningless unless you define what you mean by it.

If you mean "market value", then the location of a house IS and always WILL BE influenced by its location -- or to be more precise, the perception of the value of that location in the local and national market (pool of potential buyers)... in other words what people are willing to pay.

The price people are willing to pay for any item is the determining factor of the item's worth in the marketplace. That is and always will be the case in any capitalist (rather than socialist) nation.

"Back in the day, people would sell a house for what it was worth"?? Oh please. People sold their homes for as much as they could get for them -- exactly as they do today. The number of zeros in the selling price was lower then; that's all. So were salaries, the price of gasoline, and the cost of a college education -- just to name a few.

Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make them a troll. Do you know what a troll is?

Anyway, good luck y'all, finding that HUGE, brand new house in a perfect climate, with good schools and low crime, that you feel someone should basically give you at 1/10th the market value. Oh yea, and give you a job too, to pay for it - whether you're hard-working and skilled, or not.

Perhaps the Soviet Union would've been more y'all's style?

Ok, since some of y'all think $205,000 is too much to pay for a large, historic home with 5 fireplaces and a pool, here's something more modest.

This one is 2br/2ba, 1852 sq feet. it costs $59,500. That's about $300 per month. You could probably flip burgers at McDonalds, or cut grass for a living, and afford this house. There's nothing wrong with the house, the neighborhood, the climate, or anything else. The schools are the best in the county.

Yes, I know, the country is going to hell in a handbasket. Who can afford a $50,000 house these days?

I applaud everyone...it took a long 5 pages before someone came up with a post saying expensive housing is "Bush's fault".

anonymous - where in south Carolina? I would like to check out this assertion of employment opportunities and 'best schools in the nation' myself.

And if I'm flipping burgers for a living, I wonder bank would give me a loan?

What are you talking about? I made no assertions about employment opportunities, and I definitely didn't say they had the best schools in the nation. Where are you coming up with this?

Sorry, I missed the 'r', you typed county, not country. I stand corrected on that one. I'm still curious about the location of this house though. I know of plenty of cute looking houses in Gary, Indiana that I'm sure go for about the same price. You interested?

A 60K house in a crappy neighborhood with no jobs is worthless.

I made it perfectly clear that this house was in a decent neighborhood. And believe it or not, there are jobs in South Carolina. Yes, I know it's hard to believe. Besides, you would need to make what... $12,000/year to afford this house?
