If you support keeping abortion legal in any way, the base of the Republican Party doesn't want you.

The Democratic Party used to have a problem with this, but they've moderated their views. The abortion issue was hardly mentioned at the 2008 Democratic Convention.

Most Americans are somewhere in the middle - they're not in favor of abortion on demand, but they don't want to see it outlawed either.

I think it's a VERY touchy subject for most moderates. I know a friend who was VEHEMENTLY pro-life...until she got pregnant. She got an abortion.

I think a lot of people will go either way depending moreso on their personal experiences than on their political affiliation.

I definitely think there is room in the republican party for pro choice peoples.

Sure, to some extent. The GOP will let you vote for their candidates, and they'll take your money.

There are Log Cabin Republicans, for crying out loud.

But they'll hate you, and work to make what you value illegal, and they'll never let you run for office.

There are issues that the Dems don't appreciate dissent on either - but they aren't so strict about everybody falling in line on the big social issues.

Many moderate Republicans support the right to an abortion, although generally with restrictions (first trimester only, the woman being required to view an ultrasound first, a 72-hour waiting period, etc.).

Only the extreme religious right is completely against abortion in all cases.

There is another group of Republicans who support banning abortion, but allowing it in limited circumstances such as rape and medical necessity.

I don't know but I oppose abortion strongly and do not support Republicans. They never really opposed abortion anyway. It was a carrot to dangle in front of their supporters every 4 years for elections, then they would put it back in the refrigirator and save it for the next election.

I remembered that there is a group for Congressional Republicans called Republicans For Choice. But man, it's a short list:

Senate

House

Yes. The group includes one of my senators and my representative.

That said, I think you'll find they tend to support far more restrictions on abortion than most Democrats do.

Kay Bailey Hutchinson, for example, has a 94% pro-life voting record.

Kay Bailey Hutchinson is a tool for the oil and gas industry. She doesn't give a damn about the health of this nation. From Wiki:

Environmental record
In 2006, Hutchison received more campaign contributions from members of large oil and gas corporations than any other member of Congress.[7] In 2005, Hutchison voted against prohibiting oil leasing in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and has supported legislation promoting drilling in the refuge in 2002 and 2003. In 2005 she also voted against including oil and gas smokestacks in the Environmental Protection Agency's mercury regulations.[8][9] In 1999, she voted to remove funding for renewable and solar energy, although she has more recently stated she supports the development of alternative energy sources.[10] According to the League of Conservation Voters environmental scorecard, Hutchison received a rating of zero — the lowest possible score — in the 104th Congress.[11] However, they have since upgraded her to a grade of 18% in the 110th Congress[12]

It'll be interesting (and maybe fun) to watch her run against Rick Perry.

So, most republicans would like to see painful and unnecessary deaths for women who choose to abort rather than a safe method of extraction?

They're not really pro-life then, are they? They're just anti-choice.
In honor of the three anti woman's right to choose threads currently being pushed by men, I've contributed once more to Planned Parenthood. You understand that only 3% of their services go to abortion, but that fact doesn't bother the "right" - by the way, the Scaife family supports their local planned parenthood.
