If you were in charge, what departments of government on the federal level would you merge and/or abolish to save money..

Department of Education, abolish, job best done by state governments..

Welfare, abolish, again state government. If your going to keep it federal, merge it with unemployment and Social Security..

I would not eliminate but I would drastically downsize Department of Housing and Urban Development. I think the only task of HUD should be to help states gather data and statistics on housing and housing ownership. They need to stop giving subsidies and loans for house buyers which distorts the housing market and to stop running housing projects.

U.S. Treasury buys up the Federal Reserve, merges with the U.S. Mint.

There is no need to abolish any depts.

Reform welfare, people caught with fraudulent actions should be severely reprehended.
Same for Social Security and others.

I would restructure the Department of Education. I would extent the break to 5 months, while giving them twice the work and more opportunities for children to bring up their grades and keep them high.

After reading many of the people who founded this, whatever it has become, I think I'd do away with it all. Start over. IMHO were watching this process start to happen.

FYI- your little comment about DOE being state level not over looked. I can just imagine Texas teaching earth is 22 years old cause God says. Just like the Taliban only with cowboy hats.

Funny I wonder just how fast Romans left the 'empire'. Do we know?

Some recent historians claim that Rome never fell, it just transformed, but if I recall, they hired mercenaries to provide protection who turned on them..

I would eliminate the IRS. Instead I would institute a flat 15% tax nationwide. Our GDP is over $14 trillion. At a 70% consumption rate, 15% would provide a budget consistent with recent budgets. This would tax every American equally. Obama recently used the term "get some skin in the game." Time to pay up, folks. No credits. No refundable credits. No loopholes. No tax forms.

Social Security is a joke. Bernie Madoff is charged with running an investment scheme that is no different. I would end the program (phase in the end slowly) over the next ~10 years. You want to retire? Start saving!
