Their Own Medicine - WSJ.com

Quote:
In the health debate, liberals sing Hari Krishnas to the "public option" -- a new federal insurance program like Medicare -- but if it's good enough for the middle class, then surely it's good enough for the political class too? As it happens, more than a few Democrats disagree.

On Tuesday, the Senate health committee voted 12-11 in favor of a two-page amendment courtesy of Republican Tom Coburn that would require all Members and their staffs to enroll in any new government-run health plan. Yet all Democrats -- with the exceptions of acting chairman Chris Dodd, Barbara Mikulski and Ted Kennedy via proxy -- voted nay.

In other words, Sherrod Brown and Sheldon Whitehouse won't themselves join a plan that "will offer benefits that are as good as those available through private insurance plans -- or better," as the Ohio and Rhode Island liberals put it in a recent op-ed. And even a self-described socialist like Vermont's Bernie Sanders, who supports a government-only system, wouldn't sign himself up.
So, if the government option is such a panacea, why won't congress sign up for it?

^ gee so what? It's only healthcare but God forbid we touch the Holy grail of weapon systems! I say cut the Defense budget in half and put the savings into healthcare seeing how our defense worked so well on 9/11.

That's because it was already cut in half during the Billary years. Our brave men and women - and some of my subordinates - were serving overseas in "hot zones" and coming home to near-poverty wages and barely able to support their families. Cut the defense budget anymore and we will all be speaking Arabic/Farsi and facing Allah when we pray. Or, any third world ghetto country with small dog syndrome (i.e. North Korea) may take a shot at us.
I have a better idea - instead of cutting the defense budget, why don't we cut welfare services by 50 percent?

2008 Estimates:

Department of Health & Human Services ... $627.4 Billion
Social Security Administration..................... $592.8 Billion
Department of Housing and Urban Development................... $42.0 Billion

Marksman I applaud you for your service but you do get free medical care through the military as does my brother who also served for 8 years. I knew my post would get a response. Now I ask why shouldn't those who can't even get health insurance due to pre existing conditions be left out but if they were a Vet coverage wouldn't be denied. Trust me I am all for the best care for our military & Vets but do you see the inequality in this system?
By the way Social Security is not welfare since people pay into it and I'm quite amazed as to how many military complain about welfare when the military is basically a Socialist organization to begin with.

I agree and the problem is especially acute with those with pre-existing conditions. Until you have been there you do realize how tough it is to have a heart attack at 45 even if you have full medical insurance.

It's horrible. Yeah, this heart attack will be covered but what about the one 10 years down the line, who insures that?

What I don't like about ObamaCare is the notion insurance will be somehow free or "affordable". What does affordable mean?

To me affordable means $600 per month for a family of four with $30 prescription co-pays, $20 doctor co-pays and $200 emergency room co-pays. That's affordable.

That's affordable but I've heard some who complain $600 a month is to much while at the same time smoking their second pack of cigarettes ($250 per month) while talking on their cell phone ($100 per month) discussing on what fast food joint their going to eat at on Friday night ($100 a month).

I have actually seen people medicaid show up at our hospital with a pack of cigarettes in their pocket eating a Big-Mac while talking on their cell phone but they do not have the $3 medicaid co-pay. What the heck are we supposed to do with these idiots, make sure they have enough to live on after their filthy cigarette habit?

I so wanted to cart this guy to the street and let him die. He had to weigh 350 lbs, couldn't walk and there he was puffing on a cigarette eating a fat burger with disgusting fat juice running down his fat jowls onto his shirt yet he couldn't come up with the $3.

And this equality idea the rich are supposed to pay? Who dreamed this crap up?

My wife and I didn't smoke saving an average of $5 per day throughout our 35 year marriage saving $100,000 or better yet that makes us rich so we should pay for someone who had filthy habits?

Someone who weighs in at 800 lbs and has a "medical problem"? No crap, who would have ever guessed?

BTW Illegals show up with sore throats, stomach flu, etc. They use it like it is a Dr's office. This is part of the out of control cost.
It sin't just them. Americans show up there with minor burns, minor cuts, sprains and all when their kids have bloody noses. Sometimes they even call 911 because their kid fell off his bike and skinned his knee. And we should treat them just like Canada treats them- make them sit and wait for hours until they get tired of it, figure out that it ain't that serious and go to a damn clinic and see a doctor.
And if he felt "tingling" in the wrist, he ought to go to a clinic too and not waste the time of people trying to treat SERIOUS injuries and illnesses in the ER. And then he has the nerve to gripe about having to wait! Sheesh!

KevK I prefer the 911 calls from a fast food drive thru when the customer needs a officer when they didn't get their order right!

Jenny why start such a frivolous thread since what Obama is proposing is nothing like the Canadian healthcare system? I see your basic knowledge of the issues surrounding healthcare in the US boils down to Glenn Beck style sound bites.

Why can't they survive? Don't people that enroll into private plans love it and are wary of anything run by the government? The fittest ought to survive, right? Why would you settle for anything less?
Why cant they survive..hmmmm....Private companies already pay into govt plans...now add..millions more people on Govt plan and what do you get?...
Private companies will have to pay MORE $$$....Let me draw a picture for you...

Obama says "You can keep your private plan"...right.....as long as it survives, which it will not.....Just as Obama is planing..He knows private companies will not survive.....Chalk up another victory for the welfare state..

"Only problem with socialism is...sooner or later you run out of other peoples money"

This post is a pile of horse manure. No offense

When you say "perfect", do you mean that next year the US could be ranked above Costa Rica
