The figure of 230 mpg is an estimate only, based on draft guidelines from the EPA ... but anything in triple figures would be a huge leap forward. Also, right now the Volt is estimated to cost around $40K, and for most of us, well, we simply can't afford to put that much money into one vehicle. I understand that as production ramps up, the cost per unit should come down.
That said, I hope the Volt is a success. GM could do with some success ... maybe get a jolt from the Volt?
Help me out though; you have to plug it in, which is going to jack up your electric bill. Also, electricity is generated by coal, y'now the left's #1 energy enemy. correct?
I don't think it's that good, but I hear good reviews about how well it does. If only they would really sell it here.
I think it's funny how people say it's socialist to buy American cars, but from was a kid till this year it was capitalist and showed support for the country. I love how the meaning of words change when filtered by people's internal dialog and prejudices.

Yeah, it's definitely only the people on the left that want energy independence and a car that gets 230 mpg.
Edit: Quoted the wrong dude by accident! Sorry about that. Fixed.

Electricity is substantially cheaper than gasoline and electricity from coal is a cleaner source of transportation energy than gasoline from petroleum. Other than those two errors, you're spot on.
Its just not cost effective...at $40K buy yourself a Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Corolla, or even a Prius and it'll take you like 10-15yrs just break even with just the cost of the Volt vehicle. And no one knows the cost implications of your electricity bill. We all see what happens in the summer when the air conditioning is on.
Expect electricity costs to go up if and when more EV's hit the road and are all charging up at night and at work during the day.
Coal is a natural resource as well...and more than 90% of our electricity comes from it. I realize oil is limited supply too but EV's are simply a bandaid fix thats moving the problem over from one natural resource to another.
