AARP Reacts to President’s Health Care Townhall (http://www.aarp.org/aarp/presscenter/pressrelease/articles/prez_townhall_reaction.html - broken link)
“AARP Chief Operating Officer Tom Nelson issued this statement following remarks by the President at a townhall event in New Hampshire on health care reform.
"While the President was correct that AARP will not endorse a health care reform bill that would reduce Medicare benefits, indications that we have endorsed any of the major health care reform bills currently under consideration in Congress are inaccurate.""
Right, because spending millions in support doesn't signal their approval.
And you wonder why people don't trust what anyone is saying in this debate. Say one thing do another...
AARP tells Obama: No health plan endorsement yet - Politics AP - MiamiHerald.com (http://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics/AP/story/1181701.html - broken link)
What's the confusion? Obama indicated in NH that AARP was on board behind health care reform because they know it will be good for seniors. That's entirely correct. Read the AARP website. What AARP said this afternoon was that interpreting that remark as having indicated their endorsement of a particular plan (as opposed to particular proposals) was inaccurate. There are a variety of legislative threads that will be woven together in coming up with the final bill, and AARP, like most active players, will be looking to be involved in that process on behalf of its constituents.
“We are in constant communication with our membership through a variety of channels, which is exactly why our health care reform priorities are focused around improving and strengthening Medicare (including closing the Part D ‘doughnut hole’), as well making sure that those ages 50-64 can afford quality coverage by knocking down discriminatory insurance industry practices and providing financial support [for those] who need it.
“The AARP tele-town hall you no doubt saw with President Obama this week was one in a long line of these (I believe about 40) we’ve been doing and will continue to do so we can take questions directly from our members. This is far from the only way we keep in touch with our members, just one of the more visible.
“More importantly, and I’d think you’d get this right given your clear fervor for covering our organization, AARP has not endorsed any of the comprehensive reform bills out there but instead supports specific measures that would help our members, like pieces that would close the doughnut hole; make safe, generic versions of expensive biologic drugs available to people who cannot currently afford them; and crack down on waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare. Somehow you seem to have missed this from our CEO Barry Rand in the national tele-townhall we conducted on Tuesday, ‘I want to make it clear that AARP has not endorsed any of the bills currently being debated in the Congress.’ Stated, I might add, with the President sitting about 4 feet away.”

August 6, 2009
Washington Wink-Winks were flying fast Monday when a memo surfaced from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi describing the Democrats' plan to "partner" with AARP, SEIU and others in an August recess PR blitz for Obamacare and against Republicans who oppose it.
Pelosi memo:
"The Leadership is working in close coordination with the White House and outside groups (including but not limited to HCAN, Families USA, AFSCME, SEIU, AARP, etc.) to ensure complementary efforts during August. The President, Secretary Sebelius and other principals in the reform debate will be working throughout the month to hold events, promote the message in the press and move the reform effort forward."
It looks like AARP is now endorsing "bills currently being debated in the Congress."
That number of members is not right as they had it about one more than they will have at the end of this month. My subscription runs out then and there won't be a renewal. I think that AARP will be very surprised at the number of former members that didn't renew. I know of none who are going that way.
The bosses of AARP don't feel the way most of the members do and they will find huge numbers of losses of members.

Obama has the ok from AMA, also, but he doesn't have the ok of many of the members of AMA. They may lose as many members as the AARP will over this crap.

Well the Republicans are on board for reform too and they don't support any of the 5 bills in congress. Their position is the same as AARP.
