After doing some research into the # of illegal aliens in Central Florida and wage trends, the two can be linked. Illegal aliens have certainly depressed American's wages on all non-professional occupations.

See, why should Walmart or Disney or the Computer shop across the street hire you, an American worker, and pay Social security (when a worker pays SS tax, the employer pays it too), pay federal taxes, work comp insurance, give you days off and all, when they can hire an illegal worker for 1/2 of the US worker's wage and pay no taxes or have any work comp insurance?? That is what is causing wages to go down.

In regards to Capitalism vs. Socialism... I realize that profit sometimes causes companies to underpay their workers. I am a true believer in Capitalism and I know socialism causes the economy to be stagnant (see France for a prime example - 10 years of stagnation in a super-socialist country).

However, we can be a capitalist society and yet pay our workers well. America did it from the mid-1940s - early 1960's. To get wages back up, we go back to the illegal alien issue.

If the market was not so flooded with illegal cheap labor, companies would be FORCED to pay their workers more to attract workers. This is part of capitalism... it's supply and demand. Very simple. Remove the oversupply of workers from the US workforce and wages will go back up almost immediately!!

If we can remove the oversupply of cheap labor from the US economy, we can easily get wages to go back up and to force companies to provide benefits which were common before the US became "illegal alien land", such as health insurance, maternity leave, and sick pay in order to attract workers.

This is not a new concept. It worked wonderfully until the illegal alien invasions starting in the 1970s - present. If you look at wage trends in the USA, you will see that workers in many areas have been paid less and less since the invasion began. Do not confuse the wage adjustments based on inflation and actual wages going up.

NOTE: This is NOT an illegal alien thread. This is a discussion of wages, which in FL, have been going down steadily since after 9/11. Illegal aliens are mentioned here as an economic factor that causes wages to go down.

Opinions on this?? Anyone think we can get wages and American quality of life back up with throngs of illegal aliens in the USA??

Sorry, I didn't mean to make light of your thread, I just couldn't resist.

Implementing the Fair Tax would help in alleviating this issue by forcing illegals, criminals, and everyone to pay the same tax. This would require the illegals to demand higher wages to compensate for the sales taxes they must pay.

I think some states need to do away with "Right to work" laws.

While a lot of people are against unions, unions do help keep wages high and worker benefits. They also provide a means for the average worker to collectively protest.

Actually the net result of unions is the reverse, they drive business out, therefore eliminating jobs.

Thus the reason we've lost over 5000 jobs here in the last 6 years. As soon as the unions were voted into the local manufacturing companies, they had to move to where they could reduce their overhead.

The problem is that those unions weren't strong enough.

Look at the Screen Actors Guild if you want to see a strong union.
