It looks like a PSA for crying out loud.

These two speeches are not intended for the same audience.
I have not watched Bush's speech, but I did read it. I think that Bush clearly had a political aspect to his speech - and the timing was certainly political. But I stand by what I said. The two speeches were not identical by any stretch of the imagination, but they did cover much the same ground.

It took away from some of ours because my daughter is in week 3, it's not their first day.

“Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the President. These would get collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals.”
This was the original text (portion) of the study guide. Objectionable, to say the least. Another point; why did they release the study guide 6 days ahead of the speech? Why not release it all at once? That is what caused the controversy - we had no way knowing what kind of "help" they were asking for. Without the speech, it was just incompetence, to say the least.

I think its pretty hilarious that a bunch of people made such a HUGE deal about this speech to the kids in school when it was in the end so innocent.
More proof that anything Obama does is deemed wrong by the right. I mean I thought everyone wanted their kids to stay in school. OR would the right prefer them to drop out and be dullards.

perhaps, when they embarked upon this great adventure, the obama administration didn't think that so many people would be so paranoid that they would demand an advance copy of a speech the president was going to make to their kids.

perhaps it didn't occur to them that people would scream that obama was going to brainwash their kids with commie propaganda.

naive, i know!

"I think we've reached a little bit of the silly season when the president of the United States can't tell kids in school to study hard and stay in school," presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters. "I think both political parties agree that the dropout rate is something that threatens our long-term economic success."
I do question the use of the word "furor" when referring to Obama's school speech...it's subliminally the same as Fuhrer...

We have seen how this anti-Obama movement from the right wing extremists is spiraling out of control, I wonder how far are people willing to go, it looks like a massive Jerry Springer show, or one of those televangelists shows. People are showing incredible fanatism and ignorance, who is their leader???? Limbaugh??? Glenn Beck, O'Reilley, Ohh pleaassee..., we need to do better than that, otherwise we are going to be the joke of the world. Some claim that the democrats did the same to GW Bush, which is partially true, but it was not nearly to this hysterical level. This crowd is easily manipulated by non scrupulous subjects like the ones I mention above, they make the country look very bad.....
It reminds me of democrats in Florida. Remember when they were all in the streets crying and fussing because they learned they might have possibly voted for Pat Buchanan. LOLs. I don't usually laugh at others stupidity, but those people cracked me up.

Why would anyone have any problem with this?
Because we don't need government telling kids, or anyone else, to get invooved in their community. That is up to individuals to do on their own.

I have a huge problem when politicians talk about Americans sacrificing and getting involved and all this other garbage they talk about. It's not their job to do that. People are perfectly capable of doing that on their own. That's why it is usually called volunteer work.

Utterly bogus.

This wasn't government telling anyone to get involved in their community. This was a President encouraging students to stay in school.

Whether people are perfectly capable of getting involved doesn't matter. It's whether they will choose to get involved that matters. And a little encouragement to do so doesn't hurt anyone.
