California Cuts Water Supply by a Third to Protect Endangered Delta Smelt Fish

September 02, 2007 by
Jeanne Marie Kerns Jeanne Marie Kerns

Largest Water Supply in California History

According to the State Water Contractors news release, California has been issued a court order to reduce its water supply by a third to protect endangered fish.

The statewide reduction of water is the largest reduction of water supply in California history. 27 public water companies in Northern, Central and Southern California are to comply with the court order that was issued to protect the Delta smelt, an endangered fish. The court order will

effect farms, businesses and people in the California area.

Judge Oliver Wanger of the United States District Court is responsible for ordering the massive water reduction from California's two largest water delivery systems which included the State Water Project and Central Valley Project. The amount issued to be cut back is approximately two million acre feet of water. The water reduction will be in effect until federal agencies devise a plan to ensure the safety of the Delta smelt as well as be in compliance with the Endangered Species Act.

All local water agencies will now have to rely on other sources of water as well as their emergency sources that include groundwater and storage supplies. With the local agencies having to rely on these sources, they are hoping that the impact does not directly effect their customers. By using these resources, agencies realize that if a major disaster was to hit, and 2007 being the driest year on record for certain parts of California, that their water reserve will be completely used up.

Those who will be immediately impacted by the water reduction will be the agricultural communities in the San Joaquin Valley, Inland Empire and San Diego, who will be forced to abandon their crop planting this coming winter and springs. Others impacted will be those in urban area who will need to conserve water during the reduction. The rest of those affected may have more restrictions like rationing as well as higher water costs.

This is exactly why people get so pissed at environmentalists. I am sorry but this countries people and economy take precedence over a damn fish. Ugh it is crazy you have freakin HUMAN BEINGS who don't have food because we have to protect a fish. Could the environmentalists get any dumber

If you made the effort to do a bit of research, you might have understood why this fish needs protection...

Monday Senator Dean Florez is hoping to convince people that this plan is not only good for smelt, but for the public as well.

There are about 5 to 7 centimeters long and feed mostly on zooplankton, but they also play an important role in the Sacramento Delta's food chain.

Brent Walthall, the Asst. General Manager of the Kern County Water Agency, said, "We are making sure that we have a strong Delta Smelt population which is beneficial to the Delta ecosystem, and in turn helpful to Kern's water supply because, unless the health of the Delta is in good shape, our water will not be in good shape."

The end scenario: fish such as salmon feed on the smelt and if the fish can't eat, eventually humans will have less to eat.

Far more so than any possibility of any real global warming. Which is obvious to most that it's just a scam to separate the American tax payers from even more of their property.

This little smelt should die off, it has such a narrowly defined requirements for its living environment. This smelt has lost the battle for Darwin's theory of evolution, it needs to go the way of the other fossils.

The endangered kangaroo rat lives in the San Joaquin valley too, and when those farms dry up, so will thousands of the little rats.

They grow so much food in that valley, even here in Wisconsin we have row after row of carrots and other vegetables from Fresno, CA. They also grow a huge amount of cotton their too.

Sorry tree hugers, but the smelt matters for crap, this is an example of what happens when the loony left is running the show.

So you can understand science enough to get Darwin, but you don't get the meaning and importance of eco systems and food chains...interesting and yet... puzzling.

This is exactly why I call then enviromentalists communists. The first thing the commies do when they take over a country is make all private property public. Without private property rights we have no freedom. At all. And the enviros destroy private property rights.

This crap in California reminds me of the terror famine in the Ukraine. Joseph Stalin let 5 million people starve to death by cutting water supplies to farms. Every kid in America should be required to read "The Harvest of Sorrow" by Robert Conquest.

If it were up to the commie enviros 5 million Americans would be starving to death. Their goal isn't to save the planet. It's to kill people.

Yes, they want to annihilate every idiot that does not understand basic biology as they are very low on the food chain and they are using up way too much oxygen with their mouth breathing.

There's so few delta smelt now it will have little if any impact on salmon. They should have caught some and attempted to raise them in a tank to prevent their extinction.
