I agree, national self insurance sounds better than most of the plans in Congress.
While I do love single payer, national self insurance doesn't sound like a bad alternative.

Jees, I can already see how I would begin to get free care while poor saps who have no money and no assets pay for my expenses. Since I dont pay income taxes, legally, because my "net profit" a year always = $0, then I would indeed not pay for health care, despite having enough "assets" to pretty much pay for almost any care I want/need..

Nope!! just another shade of the same color, with a phony name. If you want the government to help with real self insurance, then you establish tax free medical savings accounts, if you don't spend it you keep it and there is no one in between you and your doctors or your Dr bills!! Watch the cost of health care go down immediately!!!!

Most people could not be trusted to self-insure in much the same way many of them have no retirement accounts because they think Social Security will be all they need. Though some of us have the money, discipline and knowledge to do the right things, most people would rather spend their money on things like boats, cars, sports of all sorts, booze, drugs, porn, gambling, and many more things that are awful ways to spend what money they have. Just like we need to ENFORCE regulations on banks, Wall Street and others, we need to ENFORCE health care insurance by taking it out of people's paychecks via the income tax as we do with FICA.

Ouch! Government is meant to protect people from themselves? Scary, scary, road to go down. But that is obvious by just looking around. Maybe we really do need a revolution in this country...

It's not self insurance in the way you're thinking about, it's essentially employers paying insurance companies to manage their health insurance. The employer pays the medical bills and the health insurance company is responsible for negotiating lower prices for medical procedures, prescriptions, etc.
