Let's say you could change 5 things in the USA, what would it be & why?
My Top 5 things:
Convert to the Metric System (or at least having both metric units & imperial units on everything - incl. road signs)
All states should have same tax rates + include taxes with the price (that makes it easier to know how much to actually pay!)
All cars should ONLY have rear AMBER turn signal (NO red like many cars have) + having mirror/side turn signals - (like cars in Europe)
All employers must be required to give certain days/weeks of paid Vacation/Days off for every employee, + giving 3 months off PAID to mother's with newborn babies, and 3 months unpaid if they want to take off another 3 months). Also having more public holidays, such as Easter Monday and Boxing Day (day after Christmas).
Improved roads/public transportation - Fix roads better, add more street lights, and add Reflective raised pavement markers on all lanes.

Reason: Since so many of the suggestions in replies 2-9 were political, this had to be moved from General US.
I wish the volume of political disagreement could be turned down. Not that disagreement is bad, but the yelling and ridiculous things that people say to one another (accusations of being traitors, communists, nazis, racists, etc)
Definitely public transportation. There is no reason why the U.S. should lag so far behind other nations with regards to national high-speed rail
Implement Tort Reform- Excessively punative civil law is the root of many of our problems. If this were in place we wouldn't need much health care reform. Less damages paid by insurance, lower rates and less need to do CYA tests for doctors, lower cost for the consumer and for government subsidised health organizations.
Reign in the lobbyist influence in DC- restrict contributions from special interest groups, including restricting these groups from employing or compenstating legislators for a predetermined time after they leave office.
Return to being a lender nation- What ever happened to the US being a nation of savers lending to other countries? How about spending less money instead of borrowing more?
Add a Balanced budget amendment- See number 3. Sure people can argue the pros and cons of said amendment. I'll argue never spending more than you make is good fiscal policy.
Eliminate the electoral vote- Allow corporations to appoint the leadership of our country- Not really, just seeing if you were paying attention
I would get rid of whichever five freedoms we have that are making it most difficult for our Government (a.k.a. you guys) to provide for all of my needs. 'Cause Lord knows I don't like providing for myself.
Give me your money.

1. Make it more difficult for people who don't pay taxes or own property to vote.
2. Make it easier for legal immigrants and an absolute nightmare for illegals.
3. Devolve more power to the states and drastically reduce the size, scope and power of the Federal Government.
4. Stop debating about the 2nd Amendment and accept the fact that the Founders wanted individuals to be armed (see also #3, vis a vis state militias and civilian run defenses - BTW, Gary Hart's PhD thesis goes into this in extensive detail).
5. Stop being such a bunch of NIMBYs, whiners and eco catastrophists regarding all types of domestic energy development.
Do you really not know? The issue has been very prominent in the media for a couple of years, and there are a handful of states that have granted this right to all citizens.
Immigration time-out
End the Fed
End "Foreign Aid"
Stop unilaterally supporting Israel
Balance the budgets!!!
