My wife went to her doctor yesterday to have them check some lumps in her breast.
(They turned out to be harmless cysts)
Bi lateral mamography $250
Breast Sonogram $ 225
Level II Consult $150
CAD diagnostic $30
Total $655 for a less than 1 hour visit.
Now what would a woman have done if she didn't have insurance?
Keep in mind the emergency room will turn you away.
In many cases they would just live the lumps and hope they are not malignant.
And the right wingers who oppose all these attempts at expanding health care coverage could not care less. ( These are people who claim to be Christians )

Imagine if you took your car to the shop and they told you that it would cost $3,000 for a new engine, and you dont have a car warranty.. I guess YOU'D PAY IT, after you get the standard 50% discount for cash..
You dont think your wifes health is worth $345? Sucks to be her I guess..
And a lot of people who have fire insurance dont have enough insurance to rebuild, or proper flood insurance when their home floods, or mine subsidance insurance when big holes open up under your home and swallows it in one piece.
Should we now cover all homes from mine holes? (and yes, its a very real problem in some neighborhoods)

Are you kidding me?
She would have been EXACTLY the same as she is right now but she would NOT have had to suffer through the UNNECESSARY indignities of these stupid tests. *and* the insurance company would not have had to cough up more than $600.
By the way did you know that mammography increases the risk of some cancers? Google it for yourself if you don't believe me.

I understand and agree with you overall, my difference is that people that have catastrophic things happen to them I don't mind there being a safety net for them, like the woman with the very sick child. No insurance will ever accept that child in the future.
And, while people should be responsible by having insurance, having your life's work used only to pay for insurance is not living but existing only.
Great! So we'll bankrupt the country instead. Fantastic plan.
Keep the government's greedy hands out of health care reform and we'll all be better off.
Refresh my memory here. Aren't you the one on Medicare?
