Should NASA be disbanded to allow the private sector to compete without the Government having their own program? After all NASA cost billions of tax dollars a year.
I think the only way real innovation in space exploration will be made is by the private sector where there is less government red tape and stalling with funding.
I think it should be a joint effort NASA with the private sector. But with NASA taking a slightly lower profile and focusing on rules, safety (in a joint fashion with private sector) and regulation.
Yes, for now at least. We have people suffering and dying in the world, I think that takes precedent over space exploration. Space is cool, but we should be fixing our world with all that money instead of being frivolous.
The private sector is getting into space travel too, now. Let's trade public space exploration for public well-being.

I would love to see NASA off the books! They have a $20B budget.
If there was big profit in what NASA does, private industry would already be on board. The patents and research are very valuable. But i doubt space exploration is profitable.
After 50 years of government leadership in space matters, why is it now called "socialized" by anyone? Suddenly, it seems, any government spending is socialism? Really? Does having a black president mean all spending is socialism? Do tell.

As you can tell by my status, I have no problem with socialism.
I just don't see the need for socialized space flight in light of other pressing world issues.

There are some things that are best left in Government hands, like national defense, air traffic control systems, waterway navigation, etc. I see space in that realm, since there is significant intertwining with aerospace defense matters. Much of the work is actually done by corporate entities anyway, but the programs need to remain in OUR hands, not the hands of Rupert Murdoch or George Soros or T Boone Pickens or Goldman-Sachs or Pat Robertson or Dan Snyder ... hopefully you get the picture that this is TOO important to leave in the hands of some unelected corporate dude who is beyond our control and may be a worse crackpot than anything we how have in DC.
What I would like to see are joint efforts, with all the great nations, to spread the costs across as much of humanity as we can. If we go to Mars, we need to go there and represent the human race, not USA bragging rights.

Unless the private sector has been hiding warp drive from the rest of us, I think what NASA is doing fits the definition of innovative.

It is a joint effort.
These are some of the private sector companies that partipate in the space program:

I agree with you for the first part, except the last sentence.
If the other countries put up money for the research and operating costs of a mission to Mars, then yes we should go there representing all of humanity. But if the USA has to bear the cost, then the rewards are for the USA. I'm sick of people and other countries trying to piggyback on the USA and reap all of the benefits with none of the work required to achieve those benefits.
