Or what to think of repeat offenders. I have a friend who has had seven DUIs.

What do we do with these people? I am thinking one has to come from a different way of thinking to get SEVEN DUIs and continue to drink and drive.

I think after multiple offenses, they should have their license permanately revoked. Another offense after that - driving drunk on a revoked license - mandatory jail time. Driving sober on a revoked license (via multiple DUIs) - misdemeanor, fat fine, and tow.

First, I think there should be degrees of DUI. 0.08 and 0.20 are not the same, and should not be treated the same.

That said, first DUI: lose license for a year plus $5,000 fine. No probationary license, no red license that allows you to drive to work, just no driving for a year whatsoever.

Second DUI: Lose license for 5 years, $10,000 fine, 6 months in jail.
Third DUI: Permanent lose of license, $20,000 fine, 2 years in jail.
Subsequent DUIs: 5 year jail terms.

well we imprison vast numbers of non-violent drug offenders. Dui clearly puts innocent people at risk. sooooooo.

Not to mention that alcohol and tobacco are much more dangerous than many illegal drugs but still legal. wonder why

Our DUI laws are not strict enough. I got rear ended by a drunk driver who couldn't even stand up to get out of his car. I went to court 3 times as a witness to the prosecution and found out this is his 4 offense in 5 years.

The fine? Community service, driving probation, and a 1500 dollar fine.

Slap on the wrist if you ask me.

Start putting these people in jail.

7 DUI's should at least get a life sentence. That's to the level of attempted murder at that point.

Even 1 DUI should result in a mandatory ignition breathalyzer, requiring the driver to breathe in the device and the car won't start if there's alcohol on the breath. Any more beyond that should be permanent loss of license and mandatory jail time.

Whoa! I can see a first DUI resulting in a huge fine, but a year's loss of license sort of ruins one's life. As a previous poster said, there is a difference between .08 and .20.

Ok, so what kind of person is the repeat offender? A bad person? A sick person?

I guess the bottom line is a dangerous person.

A reasonable argument could be made that, every time he, or anyone else, gets behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated, it could constitute "attempted murder". If the person can not control the impulse to be stupid, then, the state has the obligation to "provide for the common defense" and a drunk driver is a known risk to those around him/her.
