The country's largest gay-rights group today demanded an apology from David Letterman, for making what it called "inappropriate and incendiary remarks" regarding President Obama's appointment of a transgender woman to the Commerce Department.

I just want everyone to know that not all gays are on board with this complaint. It was obvious to me that Letterman wasn't mocking the transgender woman. The joke was about someone pretending to have had a relationship with her, and then discovering that "she was a dude". The little skit was mocking his reaction.
Here's the joke, for those who haven't seen it. You be the judge.

Sheesh.
Oh, I get it. That one went right by me. I've met Amanda Simpson and she is an extremely intelligent and impressive woman. They were lucky to get her.
I don't get the humor but Letterman is an equal opportunity offender. I wouldn't pay much attention to him.

I agree with you. After he poked fun at the Palins, I could NEVER dislike him or criticize him. At least, Letterman publicized the fact that a transgendered person is appointed to a good position in the Obama Administration. Many would otherwise not know about it.
