The amendment passed Thursday, Senate Joint Resolution 13, is more restrictive than the one considered in previous legislative sessions, because it not only would ban judges from allowing same-sex marriages, it also would prevent the legislature from allowing civil unions.

This is unlikely to pass the Indiana House, but my question is: Why do so many Republicans continue to oppose civil unions?

They have no new ideas and like to use their hatred towards gays to bring out there wingnut "Christian" base.

One very likely reason: they hate gays and lesbians.
Another possible reason: They oppose ANY and ALL forms of relationship recognition for same-sex couples.
Third reason: They hate gays and lesbians.
Fourth: It gets them votes from the Religious Right.

Arkansas doesn't allow civil unions, same-sex marriage, or domestic partnership. Anything that resembles marriage or gives the "benefits" of marriage to same-sex couples is automatically out the window.

Maybe because the citizens want them to.

They need to put it up for a state vote allow the citizens to vote and accept the results

Most don't.

Perhaps your question should be:

"Why did 33 Republicans and 5 Democrats in the Indiana Senate, oppose civil unions?"

I know you'd rather paint with the broadest brush possible, since the truth doesn't support your agenda. But you're in a debate forum here, where there are people who will point out the truth to you if you try to hide or distort it like you did.

You'll look less foolish and disingenuous, if you stick to the truth from the outset. But you may have a tough time doing that and pushing your leftist agenda at the same time.

A word to the wise (if any).

Pushing leftist agenda? LOL, & what is that agenda again? AUM paints w/a broad brush because it's true in almost all cases. Tell us who on this forum rallies against gay marriage 99.9% of the time? The righties. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...it's a duck.

Kinda throws a monkey into the wrench when people keep dreaming that we should like in a Democracy rather than a Republic.

Well, I can't speak for Indiana but I think they are idiots... people of an "older" generation and luckily they don't have too many years left... they can fight against it all they want, they aren't going to win any ideological wars... I guess you might call me a "righty" to albeit I am an independent that has fiscal conservative values and I am for gay rights...

Congratulations, that still doesn't explain the other majority of republicans who are indeed against gay marriage.
