While the overall culture of Austin, as well as much of UT, is very liberal, the UT Greek system is not. It's quite conservative and steeped in lots of traditions - like the elephant walk for pledges. Oh, the irony.
And how is the culture in Austin liberal??? You can't talk the talk without providing evidence and details. Especially since you live in another state. lol.

Huh? So....you're in favor of segregation? That's just weird.
Apparently the gays have self segregated by making their own frat.
If they want to be separate, and the heteros don't want them in their frat what's the problem?
I don't remember gays at any of the frat parties I attended.
First of all, the guys get drunk and start getting flirty and sexual with the women, I can only imagine the gay drunk guys getting drunk and hitting on the straight males too. (Or worse - the straight guys hitting on the gay guys for whatever reason).
The straight guys don't want gays in their frat so why should they be forced to accept homosexuals in their frat? It's not necessary that their manhood be affronted by having gay guys flit around their testosterone fests.

Um, cause I lived there for years while attending the University of Texas - Austin, and still have family there. And who needs "evidence and details" for such an obvious statement. Do you need evidence and details that grass is green? Obama won like 80-90+% of the vote in some Austin districts - I think 65% overall in Travis county. That's in Texas, USA. Voting for Barack Hussein Obama. It's obvious to anyone that has or does live there that Austin is a liberal town.
Democrat and Republicans have a lot more in common than what meets the eyes. Both are traditional minded at heart. Democrats favor big communist styled government and incremental progressive change if any change at all. Democrats also like status qua. Republicans enjoy traditional Christian values and also enjoy big government control.
Liberal ideology/progressiveness and lifestyle is a whole other story.

Are there really "no gay" policies in place in the by laws of fraternities or is it just sort of a preference? I really don't know.
I doubt the policies are in writing. I'm okay with it, though. When it comes to dating and socializing, people generally like to be around their own kind.
