BBC News - Cut working week to 21 hours, urges think tank

I think this would be a great way to increase productivity, decrease stress, improve quality of life, among many other things. We would have more time for family and to do chores, cook healthy meals, and just enjoy life more. I think this would be a much better idea than to let people retire at age 40, which there was a thread about not too long ago. HOWEVER, 21 hours just doesn't seem like enough to keep somebody busy, in my opinion we should start by going to 30 hours and then see how that works out. What do you guys think??

Didn't work very well in France. Their economy suffered greatly.

Not really. France is the 5th largest economy in the world and is a rather tiny country, so I think they're doing just fine

Please cite your thoughts with tangible evidence. I'm not saying you're wrong or that the opposite is true, but this doesn't provide much intellectual thought. Can we get some data?

Fance increased the average number of work hours per week in order to recover. Think back to the 1980's and early 1990's.

You're joking right? France had 39 hour work weeks until February 2000, when the socialist party reduced it to a 35 hour work week. Recently with the election of conservative Nicholas Sarkozy, they made it so you can work an extra 5 hours (to total 40 hours/week) if you so choose.

We already have 20-hour work weeks. It is called part-time employment.
