We all know how you see them,

$57,000 for a good winterization wouldn't be high for my house. I could spend $12,000 on good windows alone. I spent $5,000 on paint alone last year

Having just weatherized my home and made it energy efficient I can say that it does not cost anywhere near 57k. It cost me about 7k in materials and a week to do. I replaced the furnace/AC, new insulation, Doors/Windows, Hot water heater, and also threw down some recycled Wood floors throughout the house. Oh and I had my Chimney swept and a new roof done.

Edited to add that I have a 3 bedroom 2 bath house.

You obviously did not hire government sponsored union workers.

That smell is government theft.

Ah the anti-union hire slave labor shot. It depends on what you call winterization and what kind of house you have, also where you live. I have no problems hiring Americans and paying them a living wage

What do consider to be a living wage Boompa?

If you have a home that needs 12k for windows, I am guessing that you have roughly 3600 square feet of home. If you have a home that large, you do not need government assistance to weatherize. Much like my 2k square foot home only cost me 7k to weatherize, and it was my own dime and sweat that did it. Luckily I can do all the work myself. With estimates it would cost have cost roughly 12-15k for the work and labor. That is a high estimate at that in my area.

The Energy Department is run by Steven Chu, like President Obama a Nobel Prize winner. You'll never guess what the federal government blames for the lack of significant progress. RED tape."

Here's the news story:

Obama's federal government can weatherize your home for only $57,362 each | Top of the Ticket | Los Angeles Times

Here's another story on the same subject in a publication for government executives:

Report finds federal regulations have delayed stimulus projects (2/19/10) -- GovExec.com

And here are the actual GAO highlights from their report:

How far would they fall behind on your healthcare treatment decisions because of red tape?
(UPDATE 12:22 p.m. An Energy spokeswoman disputes the independent GAO numbers as outdated and conclusions as inaccurate. Full statement below.) [you skipped that part, OP]

(Energy GAO reaction: "The GAO report cites figures from September 2009 -- almost five months out of date. Since then, we have resolved Davis-Bacon wage issues in all 50 states, clarified how states should handle historic preservation and worked with states to resolve any remaining barriers. As a result, by the end of 2009, our programs had weatherized about 124,000 homes in total, and we are on track to weatherize more than 250,000 this year. In fact, since September 2009, we have tripled the pace of Recovery Act funded home weatherization. The report also erroneously implies that our goal was to weatherize 593,000 homes in 2009. That is wrong. The goal has been to weatherize that number by March 2012, and we are on track to meet that goal.")
