Instead, high schools need to start having the kids research what type of jobs they could feasibly get and what fields are growing, and then point them in the direction of the training they need in those fields. There are many jobs that do require college degrees, but there also many that don't, and it is you that is WOEFULLY mistaken if you think that everyone needs to undertake the expensive burden of paying for unnecessary college degrees.

Did you read what I wrote? I didn't say COLLEGES. I said postsecondary schooling. Postsecondary schooling *includes* colleges but it also encompasses tech and trade schools.

I stand by my assertion that SOME kind of postsecondary schooling is necessary to maintain a good standard of living.

When they give out degrees for "texting", every high schooler will have one. LOL

many many jobs need a degree of some kind. you need a degree to be a police officer in many places these days. So really, it is kind of sad that you have to spend a few years wasting money in college to be in civil service.

Maybe i directed my first post the wrong way. My initial post was meant in jest to the sallie mae workers protesting, like they cant find another 10/hr call center job in the area. This financial aid thing is much bigger then the Sallie mae office in hanover. those 500-1500 people however many are there pale in comparison to the millions of americans who need some kind of reform.

Whether its the government taking over and not charging interest; or whether its the government coming down and forcing universities to lower their tuition nationwide. Something needs to happen; when you figure that United States residents cannot go to an American school at an affordable cost. but a French resident can go to a French University FOR FREE.

if every institution in America took an approach to better the country - and not the approach to get as much money out of our citizens as they can; we'd be in better shape.

It is a shame that college is so expensive and that everyone can't do whatever they want for free. California is one of the states in the US that has a free tuition program for residents. Of course, the taxes, cost of living, and unemployment rate will make living there next to impossible, but you'll be getting something for FREE!!! Just like France!!! Yipee!!!

If every American took an approach to better the country - and not the approach to get as much money out of our country's government as they can - we'd be in better shape.

i'm not in this to make money off the government, greentown - i pay my taxes.

if i were in it to make money off of the government; i'd work an entry level job jost well enough to barely keep my job, but just poorly enough for them to lay me off - like many many people that were employed at my job in NEPA. and i'd sit on my rear end and collect un-employment for as long as i can. and then i'd try to collect welfare. But i dont. i bust my tail and have been promoted twice in two and a half years. So dont ever imply that i'm in this to make money out of the government. in the same aspect, i take it you dont think americans pay enough taxes? ((EDIT : To be fair, this happens all around the country))

the government doesn't control tuition, the universities do. The universities and colleges and other educational institutions need to find a way to make higher education more available to people. Higher education is going to quickly become a luxury that few americans will be able to afford. I'm not asking anyone to make college free, just affordable ( just used France as an FYI for everyone that they're citizens get a free college education as a civil right, that's all ) California isn't the only place that pays a ton of tax and is in hefty trouble, and those other places don't necessarily get ANYTHING for free.

its been a long political thought of mine that the united states would benefit from a healthy mix of Socialism and Capitalism. and thats my opinion. if you dont like it, well, tough.

Thank you for helping make that point. Some people don't understand that all these "free" programs are actually being paid for by everyone that pays taxes.
