When I first moved to the US I had a moderately heavy German accent. I had been learning English from my parents (dad is German, mother is American) so I had a good grasp (at least, I thought I did) of dialect.
I went home crying more than once because people (children AND adults) would poke fun at my accent. It took me many years of speech therapy to tone it down. Being asked if I was related to Hitler, or if I wanted sausage was just awesome for a young teenager.
People are dicks. That's what it comes down to. Most people are nice, but there are some meanies out there too.
Yeah, I had some friends from Philly that just thought it was sooo funny to laugh at Schlitterbahn and German Culture in general when they came down a few years ago. Apparently Germans are fair game for (some) young liberal kids to harass because of history and the perceived notion that white, German people are 'the oppressor' or something....pffft!
Like events that happened before he was even conceived matter to a kid who has to take such harassment.
No matter what his race is.
