I realize the law had to be upheld, but I couldn't help but think this dog may be more worthy than some recipients.

Bucks man fails to have dog get food stamps
He said the guide animal was a dependent member of his household and thus eligible.

HARRISBURG - Food stamps won't be helping a Bucks County disabled man fill his service dog's food bowl.
This is actually really sad. Anyone who owns dogs- or any pet really- can tell you how attached you get to them after a while. I know I'd be heartbroken if I couldn't afford to feed my dog.
Well this dog was a service dog for his disability - I don't see why they would let the dog starve.
It would be better off in many ways if more welfare types could simply adopt a dog to get on welfare instead of having to produce a human baby. They're going to get welfare handouts at any rate so why make them have to give birth in order to get them?

This is not about a pet but a service animal who this individual is fully depended upon. Service animals are NOT pets nor do they provide companionship. They are dependents and it is sad that this individual could not obtain any assistance in feeding his service animal.

I have the opinion that food stamps should be allowed to buy a certain amount of pet food (like maybe $25 a month or so). The problem is that some people, desperate to keep a pet, will buy human food and feed the pet with it. This is more expensive to them and really defeats the programs intent which is to help the poor people with their groceries.
There are folks like me that would never ever under any circumstances part with our 2 dogs. And we would feed them even if it meant missing a meal for ourselves. I am surprised that the pet food companies have not figured out how to make a "pet food that humans can eat too" so it would be eligible for the EBT card. This should be changed.

This dog is not a pet but a guide dog or service animal.
If the guy is disabled, and he HAS to have the dog for his disability I believe that his insurance will pay for the food. Not sure about medicaid or medicare.
2.
If the court case had found that the welfare office had to pay for his dogs food, that would have opened the flood gates of people going in, to get food stamps for their dogs. That would have taken away vital resources from people that need it, bankrupting the system possibly.
All and all, its a sad story, and I think the insurance will pay for it, but we'll probably never find out.
