"Views of the US around the world have improved sharply over the past year, a BBC World Service poll suggests.
For the first time since the annual poll began in 2005, America's influence in the world is now seen as more positive than negative.
The improved scores for the US coincided with Barack Obama becoming president, a BBC correspondent notes."

So not surprising, considering the fact that the entire world gave a sigh of relief when Bsuh and Cheney took thier long anticipated leave.

If either one of you had taken the time to look at the chart you would have seen that the US has been on an upward trend since 2007. If I remember correctly, GWB was President in 2007 and 2008. Obama has merely continued a trend that was ongoing before his arrival.

Sounds like Obama is doing a good job then.

Not quite.

The first upward tick was 2008. 2007 looks to be about 4 points less than 2006. The polls are taken between Nov. and Feb. Obama was elected in November '08, and was presdent in february '09, when the polling stopped for '08.

(The text of the article says 2007 was the lowest, 28%)

Yeah, okay...the world loved Bush. The deafening cheers in Washington were for Bush flying off into the sunset on Obama's inauguration day. The world was cheering. Don't pretend that you do not remember. Bush was so popular that he was the first POTUS to get a shoe in the head welcome from the Iraqi people.

So, we've covered "Bush started the trend."

I expect "flat denial" to arrive soon, followed by "Who cares what the effete foreigners think?" in short order. Probably an attack on the source as well.

Odds are 50/50 on a cite from EUTimes or similar ultra-right websites.

I'll be the first to admit that I think being well liked by most of the world is a good thing in general, but at what price is it worth it? Some nations can't be reasoned with and others feign friendship in order to receive US aid and money. Perhaps we as a nation need to clean our own house before we begin to figure out how to help everyone else. The way the rest of the world "feels" about the USA tends to be based too much on our own military activity, who our allies and enemies are, and how much money we give to other nations, and who those receiving the money are. Maybe we should all be asking, "How do the citizens of the USA feel about our current course of action as a nation?"; instead of wondering how we may be percieved in Europe or elsewhere.

Just out of curiosity, what else would you expect their evaluations of us to be based on?

Unless you feel they ought to agree that we are superior because we say we are?

When Obama continues good things which started under Bush, then Obama gets credit. When Obama continues bad things which started under Bush.. Its all Bushs fault.. even 15 months later!

Sounds a little hypocritical..
